i notice that praise for jonny evans seems to be in short supply on this board. bit of a contrast to when he had a few ropey moments last season and many on the old board coudn't wait to slate him. he had a fantastic game last night and it looks as if a good pre season has done him the world of good.

Yep, mentioned in the other thread that he had a good game. If you watched him in the game he was shouting instructions of where the defence should go and provided great cover. He may not be as confident on the ball as smalling and jones but he still put in a great defensive performance which allowed the other two to shine and he should get the deserving credit for this.

Totally agree, had a great game in a solid defensive unit last night. Deserves as much praise as smalling and jones

Had a decent game, but he still worries me when he plays.

I wouldn't say he had a fantastic game. One of Tottenham’s only solid chances came from his mistake.
As askdannyjeeves says, a decent game, and if he's all we've got to cover for Vidic and Rio, then so bit it, but the guy is without question a liability (imo).

I thought Evans has looked much better this term but perhaps he's had to up his game, he's seen Smalling come in last year and now Jones, he might have thought that with Brown and O'Shea gone he would get more games. But Smalling had a goos season last year and Jones has hit the ground running. For me though Anderson should have got MOTM last night.

I agree with dannyjeeves, Evans was ok last night but I always worry when he plays. Smalling and Jones are my preferred cover in the centre...

He was solid but he wasnt great
Lucky not be sent off early in the second half and still had his fair share of wobbly moments. Still much muhc prefer Jones and Smalling

The trouble for Evans is that one good game won't be enough for him or the fans to class him as a reliable or consistent CB. He needs more games or atleast a run of them. Otherwise it's difficult to compare him to players who are playing week in week out. The trouble with these things is that you often get left out after a poor performance and that doesn't do a young player's confidence or development any good. The same could happen to any of our defenders. Despite having reservations about him, I would like Evans to be given a run of games to develop his confidence and his game. The Arsenal match would be an ideal opportunity to do that.
