Interesting Choice of Players Left Behind

Kaboul, Chadli, Rose, Ade, Dembele.

Interesting choice of players.

I myself would have left behind Lloris Lamela Vertonghen and Eriksen too - because we don't need to win this game, but after two slip ups in the league, and arsenal next week, we definitely need to win on Sunday, but I will back Poch's judgement.

Aside from the fact that the players left at home will almost certainly start on Sunday, does it tell us anything else?

I guess with Ade he was shattered on Saturday, understandably having only just got back from international duty, and I guess Kaboul cannot play games in a short space of time?

Dembele has similar issues with fitness, and may be being protected?

Chadli - well hes just becoming a key player, and rightly so.

Rose - seems to have established himself as number 1 left back

I agree...we need to see off this group ASAP before then playing the kids.

We cannot avoid taking first teamers with us to these games and its just a case of selective rotation so that its not the same key players in the squad every time.

Its basically the same approach that AVB took, but everyone likes to bang on that he played the first team every time and the league results suffered....a myth!

Chronic - is 100% behind Poch!

i would have left behind the starting line up for sunday, whatever that may be.

Didn`t Poch put out a completely different team when they played Liverpool to the team used midweek against Limassol, and a fat lot of good that did. Sitting on their backsides did absolutely nothing for the team when it mattered.

what about townsend lennon paulinho and the rest of the non white players? seems an odd reason unless rose specifically asked not to go

==================

Didnt Rose get sent off (and subsequent get himself in further trouble) for reacting badly to the chants? I dont blame him, but maybe that was the reason why he's left behind more so than the other black players.

I also think it makes sense to leave behind Dembele (can be injury prone), Chadli (our most dangerous player thus far), Kaboul (injury prone - obvious) and Ade (our main striker - need to wrap him in cotton wool).

And of course, we still need to take a reasonably decent squad and first XI so cant leave too many more behind.

Except on team selection!

I don't think we should have any complaints really. We can't treat the Europa league like we have in the past few years.

If we left our whole starting XI from Sunday at home and come up short tonight how many of you are gonna be complaining saying how rubbish Townsend is, or Lennon is way past it.

These games we need our key players.

I think you misunderstand the concept of being 100% behind him.

it doesn't mean that I automatically have to agree with everything he does, it means that I wont be slating him because of a disagreement because I will ultimately support him. infact I wont even slate him if he gets something wrong, I want him given 3 years no questions asked so long as the football is good and there is evidence he is building. none of this sack him if we have a few rocky results like how half of spurs fans call for

eh? last year avb played very strong teams throughout.

so you are saying you want a weaker team to be played? so basically you agree with my article?

"I don't think we should have any complaints really. We can't treat the Europa league like we have in the past few years."

Apart from Arry in 2011-12, Spurs managers have not been contemptuous of team selections for UEFA games. The premise is always to try and play the 'weakest possible strong team' (especially for the away legs) .

The manager has to do this on the basis of the quality of the opponent, current/potential injuries, future fixtures, giving as much of the squad as much competitive game time as is possible etc.

Nothing to do with giving players confidence, or playing exotic formations.
Just football management pure and simple.

Chronic what makes you think we don't need to win this game? Have we won all the other games already?

The bottom line is Spurs won all of their trophies during their 120 year history by playing a full strength team throughout all their winning years. Understrength usually means nothing at the end of the season. Not rocket science. Spurs will never win another trophy until they really start to target a trophy and take it really really serious.
