Use of holding midfielder

In another thread a fan posted that we seem to "invite pressure" which led me to think about our use of the DM. Stevie is sitting so deep that at times he is even behind the two centre backs and unless we are chasing the game he almost never crosses the half way line. Now, compare that to Barcelona/Spain's use of Sergio Busquets who has done so well for club and country in that role. We never see him sitting so deeply and is a result he is able to play his part in pressing the opposition further up the field. Brendan and his staff must instruct Stevie to push up ahead of our back four and stop all this talk of him playing as a "quarterback". We are playing in the EPL not the NFL.

And other fans whine he's not in the defensive positions cause he's pushing up.

So what do you think TOOR?

I think we need to abandon the role for a few games and see if we can play a more defensive system to get a bit of confidence and fluidy back in our play.

I'd like to see a 4-2-3-1. Have both Gerrard and Lucas as defensive midfielders with Lucas holding at all times and let Gerrard create with Lallana behind Balotelli and Sterling and Coutinho either side.

Perhaps you (TOOR) were happy with Stevie's display yesterday.

What would be your team for EFC if Studge is fit?

You're not going to reel me in, don't waste your time.

If Sturridge was fit, I'd still have him on the bench. We see how important he is to is, we need to be careful and introduce him slowly.

But, don't you agree that our DMs sit too deep? Wouldn't you prefer to see us pressuring further up the field?

No. I feel not deep enough, we need to be more defensive for a while as it's too easy to attack us and when we are not in good form and playing well as a team, we can't afford to be easy to attack. We need to tighten up.
