In Berlin for a few days, and last night I went to the impressive Olympic Stadium to watch Hertha Berlin play Vfb Stuttgart, and Hertha had Salomon Kalou playing as striker and Johnny Heitinga at CB. A tough game which Hertha were fortunate to win 3-2 I thought. Stuttgart led within five minutes and although they fell 3-1 behind at one stage I always felt they had the beating of Hertha, but silly defensive errors cost them and they left it too late. Kalou scored two goals, one a deft chip over the goalie's legs in a one-to-one, and the other a dubious penalty immediately before being brought off. £22 to get in, not bad value, and a good and noisy crowd. And Hertha play in a replica of Wigan Athletic's strip.

No such problems with the crowd last night, Alouion, lots of whistling and giving the bird to the announcement of the Stuttgart team over the PA system, and a marked police presence at the station and outside the stadium, but no trouble at all, not even a word spoken on the S-Bahn back to the Hauptbahnhof. The crowd last night was 46,312 out of a capacity of 74,500. That's like Manchester City playing at Old Trafford.
I did miss the Berahino interview - I wonder what bad times at the club he was referring to. I'm aware of his refugee background.
And yes, we will lose him eventually, but let's hope we get five years out of him (optimistic) and he goes at least to one of the top four, and that he gets into the England team on a permanent basis.

I think the bad times refer to the flack after Cardiff game and a couple of bad headlines in the local papers. Ancient history now.
Let's hope he further enhances his reputation by getting the winner at Anfield today.

How was it as an all round experience?
I'm organising a stag do and will probably do it in Berlin, was thinking of organising going to a game while there cos I've heard its such a different match day experience to here.

Alouion, yes of course, the Cardiff aftermath. I'm sure he'll have learned a hard lesson for life there.
TBAG - I can't say I've got to know Berlin that well, but where I'm staying, Alexanderplatz, seems pretty lively, but I'm not one for clubbing. The match experience was good if a little slow during the first half, but that was probably just me. At the Olympic Stadium, the crowd's a fair way from the pitch over the 8 lane running track, so there just seemed a little intimacy and immediacy lacking, but it was fine really, and not that much different to a game in England, and definitely worth doing, and what took me by surprise is you can smoke and drink in the actual stadium. The city's transport system's really good, but most of the best sights are walkable between the excellent Hauptbahnhof and the cathedral, the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the TV tower.

Aries - the museum at Checkpoint Charlie is worth a visit. It shows all the imaginative ways in which East Germans tried to cross to the West. There is also the old Gestapo headquarters in Wilhelmstrasse.
TBAG - the nightlife there is the stuff of legends. I passed an interesting evening talking to a transvestite.
However you need to do your research if you are organising a stag do there.

Cheers guys. I'm not gunna plan too much cos with 20+ people its hard and sometimes its better if people do their own thing. I was just thinking beer bike one day, Berlin game another and a fancy dress night out then let people get on with it rest of the time and the nightlife is there for those who want it. Have done some research so far and if done well I think it could turn out to be a cracker

We're you drinking bro'?
The penalty was the first goal, after 22 minutes. He did not get taken off immediately after that.

D'Jeezus, I've laid off the funny stuff all week but my wording wasn't very good was it. The penalty came in the first half, and he was taken off as soon as he got his second, the deft chip.
