BRrrr, Shut That Door

...there's a draft coming in.

For me this is Liverpool's major problem. We need to go back to basics and learn how to defend. From what we have publicly heard, I'm satisfied with how Brendan has dealt with Mario's shirt swapping saga. I have no problem with players doing this at full time regardless of the result but I'm less keen on it at half time but of course because it's Mario it gets very overblown.

What is more important for Brendan to deal with is our defence. As a striker, Mario can be blamed for his lack of goals but the defenders have to take responsibility for the ones we are conceding. This is a problem that stretches back to last season, before Mario's arrival, and it still hasn't been dealt with. One clean sheet all season and some games back into last season is nowhere near good enough.

On current form we are no longer outscoring opponents, so I feel Brendan should perhaps, only for the short term, shift his focus away from (not abandon) our attacking play and onto defending more as unit and keeping possession in midfield.

Just for a few matches starting tomorrow, I would love to see us achieve some clean sheets even if it means winning ugly/ grinding out results. The whole team needs a confidence boost and I think a shut-out would do that. I would also like to see two forwards up front; not too bothered about who is played but it's a Home game against a team we should be looking to beat and the lone striker doesn't seem to be working so far. Surely the diamond can still work with two in front?

Getting a goal keeper that doesn't think its a good idea to go for a ball in his 6 yard box with his feet would be a good idea!!!!!!!!!!!

You're lucky Valdes is training with United then, Kolo.

Agree with the OP btw.

He'll sort out the defence

Have to agree though theres a lot of defensive mistakes etc but so often we are starting games so slowly which isn't helping. The fact opposition teams find it easy to get fired up against us and we turn up in slippers stroking it around like its a pre season friendly.

Back to basics high intensity defensive work pressing from the front and fast tempo passing when we win the ball would be a good place to start.

I've been making this point for about a month now, OP.

Forget the nice play etc, drumming it into the players and playing it til they get it again. It's time to tighten up, play a 4-2-3-1 with two defensive midfielders and get a few wins, with less defenders being exposed on so many occasions. This will bring the confidence needed to go back to our more attacking game.
