I'm not a goalkeeper but when I have played in goal on the beach or in the garden I have tended to gamble on stopping shots all the time.
I never wait. I move left or right or stay put. One in three and good luck to you.
So I find myself thinking about the great performance of David on Sunday.
For Drogba's shot, he was positioned at the near post. He threw a hand out as if he was going to move across the goal but actually stayed put. He left a good 15ft open to his right but he was correct.
For Hazard he was to the right of his goal, threw out his left hand as a decoy, stayed still and got it correct again.
Strangely if he had conceded both he would be blameless.
Luck or genius?

However, what De Gea is doing is hardly an issue; there is no need to replace him at all. His positives out weigh his negatives in any system we will play in the future.

I didn't say we need to replace him. And the latter comment is stupid because if we play in a system that exposes his weaknesses that won't be the case.

I'm not certain he'll improve, I just think like most young players you improve through experience which has an even great importance for keepers.
...............
I think he has every chance of improving. DDG is soon to be 24. The great Dane was 28 when he joined united and we had to work on his command of the area for the first few years.
As I said to Daz, DDG has never had a settled defence in front of him from day one. Until that does change any improvement will be slow.

Petr Cech, for example, has never really improved his kicking and coming off his line since he's been at Chelsea. That's in ten years of gaining experience at the highest level.
The only time I can think it has really been a big issue was under RDM and AVB, in particular.
If Chelsea were to stick with that way of playing Cech wouldn't have been the keeper they needed. I'm not saying this will be the case with De Gea, but it could be.
If we get a more commanding defence and don't play a high line then it probably won't matter too much. But if that doesn't happen and Van Gaal and his successor are looking to create a style of play like Bayern, for example, then De Gea could be a weakness in the side if he doesn't improve coming off his line.
Will be interesting to see how he does for Spain.

I wasn't saying you weren't really, just what I felt. Not all players reach their potential because of multiple factors but I'm confident with De Gea.
He's the last of our worries right now and I'm perfectly happy seeing him in our goal and hope he continues being our #1 for many years to come. Is he better than Courtois, who cares, he's still a brilliant keeper and one who is more than capable of being a United keeper.
Lets just hope we can sort out our defence over the next 12 months which is still a mess and not really helping De Gea. Rafael has looked good so far and Shaw had a great game on Sunday as did Smalling coming back into such a big game. But I'm still unconvinced with Rojo, I feel LVG made the mistake of concerning himself too much with needing a left side CB to play in a back 3 which he now seems to have completely abandoned. While Jones is too injury prone and Evans never quite looks good enough.

1982, fair comments.
Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of De Gea as well. But I'm still concerned that he's not dominating his area because given our defensive problems it's exposing him in some game.
The thing that annoys me the most is that he's not coming off his line enough, be it for long balls or one on ones. It's the only criticism I have of him. Because beyond that he's a very good keeper.

I thought he was beginning to come off his line a lot more at the beginning of the season but he let in so many goals (mostly not his fault) that maybe he's decided against it recently.
Like you said earlier, a lot depends on how he is being instructed.

He is a very poor decision maker, possesses a very poor sense of spatial awareness, has no authority with his own defence, even less over the opposition and he lacks footballing intelligence. So he is certainly not a "genius".
'Luck' has so far favoured him, and that is very worrying, that will not last and the club will suffer.
I do despair when the infants rave about his "shot stopping", that's his job for goodness sake, and at that he is no better than any of about 50 other gks across Europe. Any potential gk that came to me for a job as the no 1 would get short shrift from me, and shown the door, if he/she had "shot stopper" at the top of their CV.
Coco really is a clown, one of the weak links in the team, and time will gradually allow that to dawn on the console basing fantasists.
