Can someone please clarify the position with regard to obstructing the keeper when he's trying to clear the ball out of his hands as there seems to be something going on that I'm not aware of which is a bit frustrating.
I hear Smalling got his first yellow for slowing player or interfering with play or something like that, and that Balloteli got a card the other night for something similar.
So is it right that a keeper must be allowed to distribute the ball unhindered?
Does this not make it similar to a free kick? There's no other time in open play when a player is obliged to let another player make a pass or clear a ball unhindered so what is the deal with goalkeepers. Can someone clarify the rule for me please?

Never knew you were that, I'd assumed around 35/40.

I'm sure there are more recent examples"
I doubt it, it's in the FIFA laws of the game now and has been for at least ten years.

You're probably right, I know Agger had a goal for this disallowed. Wasn't booked though.

I remember Clough doing it back in the day, I think his stood though.
It's one of those ones where the law was implemented as there was a lot of confusion about it (and red faces keepers) but players for some reason still try and get away with it. Must be quite annoying for a manager, really.

I'm sure I remember one from the 90s - I think it invloved either Man City or Notts Forrest, but the attacker was running back from behind the goalie who didn't notice, and basically used his head to knock it out of the goalie's hand (he had the ball resting on the palm of one hand) and put it in the back of the net. Anyone else recall this??!!

Sure that was Gary Crosby for Forest with Andy Dibble in goal for City.
If any of the United players were going to do that yesterday it should have been an attacker not a CB. The CB then had an hour (as it turned out a few minutes!) on a Yellow Card.
Annoying but it happens. Hope Smalling has been read the riot act but then left at that.
