PREVIEW |
Call it what you will, but Real Madrid ran a mock at Anfield against Liverpool just under a fortnight ago.
The two sides meet again on Tuesday in Spain with the Reds looking for revenge on the defending European champions.
Real have won their last 10 competitive matches on the spin, whereas in contrast Liverpool's form continues to stutter following defat on Tyneside against Newcastle last weekend.
Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal short of equalling Real legend Raul's all-time Champions League goal scoring record - a brace or more tonight for the ex-Manchester United forward and he will have beaten Messi to the honour.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has defending his side, saying the hype on their defensive frailties has been over exaggerated in recent weeks.
However, stats don't lie with just three clean sheets in all competitions since 30 March last season, two of which have been against Tottenham in the Premier League.
Add to that 21 goals conceded in 15 games this season and it's difficult to see what argument the manager has.
They will have to be at their very best to avoid another one sided result in Madrid.
If the hosts win they will wrap up a place in the knockout phase with two games to spare. Depending on the groups other result tonight, Madrid could seal top spot in Group B.
As for Liverpool, anything less than a defeat would be seen as a positive result after the meeting 13 days ago. Should the Reds lose they will almost certainly need to win their remaining two group games at Ludogorets and then at home to Basel if they want to go any further in the competition this year.
