Overrated Arsenal players.

Is it me or do us Arsenal fans massively overrate our own players? I know every fan in every club thinks the sun shines out of their own players árses, but I really think Gooners have a tendency to grossly overate the qualities of certain players in the squad. Let’s have a brief summary of those we massively overrate:

Szczesny – Most thought Szczesny was actually going to progress to be one of the best Europeans goalies in modern times. Laughable really. Almost as bad as when a few Spurs fans thought Heurelho Gomes was World Class.

Koscielny – The very definition of an overrated player. Most actually believe Koscielny is World Class. Truth be told, Mertesacker has made Koscielny look like a half decent centre back. Without the German, Koscielny is a lumbering clumsy oaf with a mistake or two in him. And when he’s really poor, he either bags an Own Goal or gets sent off. There’s a reason why Sahko is preferred to him in the French national team.

Wilshere – Not actually sure if we overrate Jack anymore. Perhaps we have finally seen the light or Jacks true potential has shown up. He’s a decent enough player, but nowhere near the hype that surrounded him after THAT Barcelona game.

Podolski – Yes there are still some poor folks out there that think Podolski is the answer to our striking problems. He’s not quick, he doesn’t work hard, but just because he’s a bit of a lad on Twitter a lot of Gooners want to see Lukas given a chance up front. At £90,000, not only is Podolski overrated, but he’s a complete waste of resources.

Giroud – A vast majority of Gooners still think Giroud is good enough to play for Arsenal, even as backup option. Apparently he gives us something different. However, when pressed, quite what that “something different" is they fail to mention. It sickens me to think that our club is still employing dross like Giroud. We used to have Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp, Theirry Henry, Nicolas Anelka, Robin Van Persie grace our attack. Now we have the French carthorse disgracing us at every given opportunity.

So, do you agree, and/or want to list any other overrated players at Arsenal?

HK

Agree Seebs about the DM situation. Our defence gets no protection at all. Top quality DM and Kos and Mert are world beaters again

Just to add a point which is slightly off topic but it wasn’t that long ago when teams had to “rough up” Arsenal and exercise physicality to beat us, as they could not compete (on a footballing level) with Arsenal.

Over the last couple of seasons we have often been outplayed (or beaten) by ‘lesser’ ball playing sides, (quite the opposite to the Bolton, Blackburn, and Stoke sides that used to cause us problems) which I believe is further evidence that a change in personnel, tactics, and approach is required.

You seem to have the names the wrong way round, because on the contrary, it is Koscielny that carries Mertesacker.

Well definitely not if you're going to delete my posts.

I've already had Gunther wrecking this article with his Giroud cóckmunch. Would prefer it if I had proper contributions, even if it was in disagreement.

I am not Gunther to begin with. You ruined your article yourself you

Mert regularly mops up after Kos. Its one of the reasons why their partnership is very good when theyre on the same wavelength. Kos always attacks the ball and this plays to Merts strength of positioning sense as he will get in the right place if it goes past Kos (which is quite frequently). As individuals both have major flaws but are capable of working well together. The problem seems to be when they get it wrong they struggle to recover, but Im looking forward to having them both at CB again soon..

This is spot on. And the partnership can be further improved by 2 basic changes.

1) Get a proper DM in to cover the 2 CBs with further protection. That way, you're reducing the risk of a counter attack and having the 2 CBs exposed.

2) Get one of the full-backs to sit in his position if the other is bombing forwards. So many times we've been caught on the counter because both our full backs were too busy bombing forwards rather than doing their basic defending.

Both points have been quite evident for a few years now, so perhaps the better solution is to get a manager who knows what he's doing.
