I know it's far too early to be getting ahead of ourselves with England but they're on a good winning streak right now, and today facing quite possibly the toughest team since the World Cup, they put in a very good performance.
Could this be partly down to Gerrard's retirement from England? I always felt he was a rather poor captain for England and that was shown none more so than during the WC.
Was Slippery Stevie holding England back?

Yes. Gerrard always held England back from qualifying from poor groups and beating championship level teams.

Gerrard has always been overrated.
Long may the scousers continue their delusion and keep him as their Captain.

Its not Gerrards fault hes better then Lampard and Scholes, just cause he is doesn't mean hes over rated.

I don't think England should get too excited about beating a poor Scottish team. From what I saw the 3-1 scoreline flattered Gordon Strachan's team. England could and should have scored a few more than they did and it was poor finishing that denied them rather than a defence that was ocassionally at sixes and sevens.
Although Scotland thoroughly deserved their win against an pretty inept Ireland last Friday, they were hardly at the races tonight.
Unless both teams improve dramatically over the next few months, Scotland won't qualify for and England won't last long in the European Championship competition.

Elements of truth to the wum article though as I felt that Gerrard was holding back progression towards the last couple of years as we seemed to set up around him and Rooney
