Michael Clarke:
107 tests
Runs 8297
Avg 50.6; home 61.9, away & neutral 41.5
Avg excl BD & Zim 51.3
AB de Villers
95 tests
Runs 7296
Avg 51.0; home 45.8, away & neutral 57.2
Avg excl BD & Zim 52.0
Younis Khan
95 tests
Runs 8322
Avg 54.0; home 59.3, away & neutral 52.6
Avg excl BD & Zim 52.1
If I were to pick 2 of these for my middle order, I would go with Y Khan and ABD because these two are more reliable on the road.
I am talking about test cricket only. ABD, of course, is shoulders above the other two in the shorter formats.
Clarke or de Villiers or Younis Khan

You won't get better 1 down Number 3 batsman than Rahul Dravid, rock solid and reliable in any conditions. Sublime middle order like
Rahul Dravid
Sachin Tendulkar
VVS Laxman
was treat to watch back in days.

Think OP is referring to current players only. Otherwise is have Dravid amongst the few already mentioned

I didn't realise Younis had such a good record, why do the Board keep falling out with what appears to be their premier batsman? Players like Kallis, Sanga, Jayawardene, Dravid and Tendukar have all shown that age isn't necessarily a barrier so is there another reason?

Sorry if it seems like a silly question, I've been woefully ignorant of Pakistani test cricket since they've not been able to play at home.

Look who shows up at the top with a batting average of 86 for the past 3 years!

Average is blessed by 12 not outs in 35 innings.

C'paul is quality, but not in the same class (considering the criteria some are using here). He has an average of 30 in Aus and 41 in Saffers. Homie

True, Chanders has a batting average of 41 in SA, but Y Khan's average there is even lower at 33.
SA is a difficult place for batsmen, even for Saffers. Most SA batsmen have lower averages at home than on the road.
It's difficult to judge the worth of Chanderpaul. He plays for a weak team and often watches others fall off at the other end.

Yeah, true. Fair point.

Chanderpaul has always been a selfish batsman for me. So many times he's been left with tail and has never batted well and instead protected his N.O
also he's refused to play higher up in the batting order when his team need him too. Nice stats but poor mentality for the team.
