Song is more like Gerrard than a DM.
He doesn't track runners, cover his full backs or hold his position.

How many actual DM's are out there?
Is Blind a DM for United? Not really
Is Matic is DM for Chelsea? Much better than a DM
Arteta? No.
Fernando has struggled for City in that role.
Mikel at Chelsea has been phased out, the same was supposed to happen with Lucas but he's made a comeback.
I think modern football requires a more combative, strong, pacey midfielder with a great engine who can move very fast rather than someone who just sits deeps almost a 3rd CB.

Yeah..there isnt a DM in the sense like Masch who use to be everywhere making tackles before the opposition got to our defence. But your holding midfielder must have positional sense in order to create the lines (which all teams needs if they're playing a 3-man midfield) that usually helps the team dominate possession but also protect the defence.
Although most big teams are moving away from this setup to a more flexible midfield where each midfielder must be able to perform all tasks to a decent level.

If we're using John Achterberg's opinion on who to buy then i wouldnt trust any GK we might sign to replace Mignolet.
---------------------------------
John Achterberg can't even run properly and for me is the worst goal keeping coach we've had.
In January I'd like to see 3 players come in.
1, Goal keeper
This is a must as Mignolet just isn't good enough, he makes the odd great save but his distribution is very poor. Positioning in and around the 6 yard box is shocking and I honestly think that Raheem Sterling would come for the ball more when it's in the air.
Cech.
2, defensive mid
I was in 2 minds about getting a DM or a CB but I think the defence will improve with a quality keeper behind it. We've looked better with Lucas in the team because he's the best we have in that position but he's not mobile enough, quick enough anymore after his injuries.
Lars Bender.
3, Striker
We desperately need another striker and one that is mobile, with pace and who knows where the goal is. Borini will run all day but he's not good enough and Balotelli has been a disaster to say the least.
Lacazette
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Would love Cech, Carvalho and Lacazette. Might be a bit pricey though.
Anyone know if Muriel has hit any form, rate him highly, a real pest like Suarez.

I still think positional sense is needed more than pace in the holding midfield position. If you look at what Lucas does for us when he plays, he gets himself around our CB's and picks up lots of second balls. This is something Gerrard really struggles with and it makes a huge difference. It would be nice to have someone who is really quick, but to be fair, you very rarely get isolated in that position and it is often a crowded area of the pitch so pace isn't vital.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on. A DM doesn't need to be the quickest, he needs to be an intelligent footballer. He needs to read the game, be disciplined, be in the right positions, assess where the danger is and snuff it out. Lucas does this. He's not reached the form of a few seasons ago but he is making a noticeable difference.
