Hi guys, found this video on the BBC of Coulthard putting the 2014 Williams through its paces. We are told by "experts" that the cars are easy to drive. So please enjoy the video and we can discuss how easy the cars are to drive afterwards;

I'm always a little surprised by people being surprised at young drivers getting into the sport. These days they're all starting earlier and getting into junior categories that simply didn't exist x years ago.
We live in a modern age of speed, we don't have to fly out to south America to spot talent any more, it's live streamed across the globe etc.
The sport has come a long way from gentleman racers. I have always said comparing drivers of different generations is pointless, you can only race to what you have in that time. What would the guys of the 60's think of 5G braking forces and 40+ buttons on a steering wheel. How fast would the modern lot go around a corner where the run off area was a housing estate.
To say the sport is easier these days is naive to the extreme. The sporting world in general is getting younger, even those with rules the same as the 1900's.

How dare you say that? F1 is getting easier, that is the only reason a 17 year old can drive a race car. Nothing else

you dont think technology has made the cars easier to drive as the decades past
--------------- you only have to look at the modern road cars to see how much easier they are to drive as the yrs go by --
----------- logic dictates that the ultra sophisticated world of formula 1 has gone exactly the same way

Do u not believe the added sophistication has added a difficulty.
For me there no less or no more difficult, its just a different job

no i dont -- one of the designers foremost considerations is to make the machinery as easy to drive as the design parameters and technology allows -
------ when a driver feels at one and at ease with the car the lap times improve --

It is also the drivers responsibility to take the car as close to the edge as possible. That edge is jist further away. Old cars where on the edge mich sooner..but nonetheless both are om the edge

Its no coincidence that the driver who is happiest woth the an unstable car is also regarded as the quickest

Depends how that technology is used and how you define easy. My daily run around is nothing special but could do 140mph if I so wished. It's certainly more comfortable that a similar car of the past but would the huge leap in power mean it's easier to take to the limit?
It all depends on what you call easy, on the limit at 1G or on the limit at 5G due to modern technology. It's a interesting debate.
