Football Manager: Best version?

All through my childhood I was a massive fan of the Championship Manager series. How a game which is predominantly text based grabbed me was completely out of the blue and I would spend hours immersing myself in it. Once Eidos and S.I went their separate ways it became Football Manager.

Now here is my dilemma, the last version of this I played was 2005 which I enjoyed thoroughly but after that I no longer had the time to play these sort of games. Now 9 years later I have spare time to start again but I am torn to which version to buy. I have heard that since the switchover to Steam it has become the worse for it, and that it is now overcomplicated and lacks the originals pick up and play ability. Which release for FM fans was the best one overall? I don't mind if its an older version as long as it has downloadable patches so that I can update the database to current teams ect.

For me fm2009 was ace!

However since moving to steam its been a disaster! This years offering is a waste of money, so buggy!!

It's in decline I like 13 and 14 but have been put off getting 15 by reviews (from other FM fans)

Premier Manager 2 was the bees knees for me. Still play it every once in a while now. Failing that i've played 1 full season on Champ Manager 97/98 got Derby promoted to the premier league and haven't touched it since then.

09 definitely stood out mainly due to the 3d engine. Just seems to be the only one of the series that really went a lot further from the previous edition.

I really like 15 and honestly I would say give it a go. Those people who don't like it generally do because the interface has changed but once you reprogramme your brain to find where everything is it runs great. Obviously if you're a newbie it's no worries. Only thing that's annoying is the amount of repetitive interviews and now you even get an interview in the tunnel before a game... You should be able to pick it up for under 20 quid:

I'd say the standouts of the series are 06, 09, 13 and 15.

Champ Manager 03/04 was awesome!

In terms of Football Manager, I'd probably say FM11 was my fave. I don't like the way you can't instigate feuds with other managers and make comments about managers whenever you wanted. I'd usually do it before they played a big game regardless of whether they were playing against me or not.

I'd get one of the newer ones and just play Classic mode, it strips out a lot of the gumf.

FM11 is the pinnacle of the series so far, 13 if multiplayer with friends, because you can choose for all games to be scheduled on wednesdays/saturdays
