On the whole simulation issue, I was intrigued as to whether there is anything substantial behind Maureen's claim of a 'campaign' against Chelsea.
The first thing we need to do is examine whether there is any credence to a general feeling that Chelsea have an embedded 'diving problem' in the first place.
Chelsea have picked up four bookings for simulation this season. This is the most in the league and is double the amount that Sunderland and Manchester City – the next biggest offenders – have received thus far. This makes them responsible for more than a quarter of all the 14 cautions for simulation that have been issued in total.
Conclusions:
1. For one club to be responsible for over 25% of all the cautions for simulation suggests there is indeed a diving culture at Chelsea.
2. This culture is not just limited to one or two Chelsea players either. Diego Costa, Willian, Ivanovic and Cahill have all been involved. The variety of players doing it reflects an institutionalized 'culture of diving'. This is a very different prospect to a side having just one notorious simulator at the club [Suarez at Liverpool, Bale at Tottenham and previously, Drogba at Chelsea]. Just three examples but there are many others.
3. In light of the control this particular manager has over this club, and his players in general, it would be extremely naive to believe the manager is not encouraging this strategy of simulation.
4. It would appear they have been busted. The only remaining question is whether a few pundits noticing what is going constitutes and unsporting campaigning? Of course it doesn't He is crying they weren't able to win.
