Strange decision by Pardew

Talk about taking a backwards step. I think this shows a real lack of ambition by someone who I was hoping would develop into a top English manager, something we've not had in this country arguably since Glenn Hoddle's heyday or perhaps not since even as far back as Bobby Robson and Brian Clough. Instead what we now have is yet another English manager who'll be battling to avoid the Championship rather than potentially battling away in Europe.

Pardew's had his critics and his tenure at Newcastle has had some dramatic highs and disappointing lows but the club clearly have money, some good young talent and, on their day, play great football and Pardew had a fantastic season 2011/12 when he took them to fifth, could he have gone one better eventually?

Ah well it'll be interesting to see who takes them on from here.

It's amazing how he's been painted as some sort of angel and us as 'fickle'. I guess all it shows is opposition fans don't have a clue for the most part. If you'd even care to take a look at his time with us properly you'd see why people don't like him and will never like him.

From what I've seen Pardew abused beyond belief by some of the fans no one deserves that and unless i've missed something he has remained quite dignified during it, if you think the abuse he's had is ok the you my boy haven't got a clue.

And yet you fail in being able to enlighten us non-initiated around here as to what has made Pardew such a bad manager. To be honest a lot of your hate for Pardew just seems to be based on some personal dislike you have for him. You've failed to address points which would suggest that he's actually done a pretty good job for you guys. With the budget you're on and players you've signed, or for the most part haven't signed, I can't see how you can say that Pardew has done a bad job overall.

"Nothing to do with the reported doubling of his salary at Palace then you think?"

Hmm, fair point but a bit risky if you ask me, not to mention short-termist. If he gets Palace relegated, which is a real possibility as their squad is certainly one of the weakest in the league, probably why Pulis left, then I doubt his wages will continue to be as high (and that's if he doesn't get sacked).

Another point: most managers do all they can to avoid having a relegation on their resumes. Now fair play to Pardew if he pulls this off but why risk it? He had managed to get some great results out of his Newcastle side, why not keep plugging away, get them into Europe and then maybe go for the Everton job if/when Martinez gets sacked or, if he's determined to live in London, he could go for the Palace/QPR job depending on which club stay up and at least begin from a level-playing field. Get a pre-season under his belt to get to know his squad, etc.

Finally, if Ashley is such a tight-wad then he should be looking for a bigger club than Palace to get a wage increase. As I said in the previous paragraph if he held on until the end of the season and got the best he could out of his Newcastle squad, he'd see his options improve.

Interesting article but a little too soppy for me. I might be wrong on this and ultimately my opinion on this counts for nothing obviously, I just think that Pardew will come out of this sub-optimally. It's tough to get a big gig as an English manager and despite what this author says Newcastle have one of the biggest stadiums in the country and some of the most loyal fans in the land. That gives you the potentially to do something significant. Pardew's risking making himself irrelevant, or throwing away the opportunity of becoming relevant, on the big scene by walking away from this job for reasons which are clearly not footballing ones.

Some criticise Mark Hughes, particularly his decision to walk away from Fulham after guiding them to 8th in the league. But I respect his chutzpah and winning mentality which is something you need to be a top manager. Hughes for me was perhaps too hasty but he has the right idea. Pardew on the other hand seems to be going backwards, but hey-ho, good luck to him.

I would say Newcastle are one of the more entertaining teams to watch in the PL on their day. Only saw the highlights but the game yesterday against Everton looked like a quality show. Three goals, end to end stuff and you could've scored more. Hardly what I would call dour.

Plus bearing in mind Ashley's spending (or lack of over recent years) I think Pardew's done a good job. Have a look at this stat: http://transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/transfer-league-table-last-five-seasons.html
Newcastle are actually 17th when it comes to net-spend out of the current PL clubs over the last 5 years. I think that puts his achievements into perspective. He has consistently over-achieved at your club, spectacularly so when he finished 5th.

The table in the link is for the period 2003-2008 so hardly relevant as Ashley bought Newcastle in 2007
