Look at Manchester United, it was so easy for them to demolish Spurs, in fact, any team selection by SAF would have still won. Why. The answer is simple, because of the way they play and attack. They pass the ball forward quickly and even in the last third they keep their cool and look out for the best possible pass. That way the team attacks efficiently and effectively, no much emphasis on individual skill or power play. Rooney only dribles when it is absolutely necessary or set himself up for a short.
At Chelsea the story is different, we move forward at a leisurely pace, our front runners are all center forwards (or try to be) and can all score from any where in the final third, this is good thing but now its haunting us. We have been relying on power play since the days of JM and now it seems very difficult for them to break the habit, everybody tries to score (because they know they can), no discipline, no body is ready to pass the ball to a better placed team mate. All our front runners are guilty of this (except Torres who is not cut out for Chelsea style of play).
As a result of the way we play it becomes very difficult for us to win some teams who set out to defend or who are very organised at the back. There is no guarantee that we would have won easily against that spurs side that were hammered by Utd. By relying on individual skill and power play we run into serious problems whenever our main front runners are ill, out of form or have a bad day whereas teams like Utd will always get results because by passing the all around victory is not dependent on a single player showing tremendous skill or power but the entire front runners working as one. In that way whether SAF play Hernandez or Welbeck or even me they are sure to get results because at the end of the day just a simple tap in is required.
We are screaming for a creative midfielder, take a look at Utd again, I don't see any Modrics in their midfield, infact we have better midfielders than Utd.
I am not strictly against power play because that is what is required to win against great sides like Barca (we cannot out pass barca) but Torres doesn't seem to fit into this picture, imo it is a mistake to buy him, he will never thrive in our set up, now we have to spend more money to buy creative midfielders so that he can fit in. I think we should adopt both attacking systems and adapt depending on the opposition, AVB should re-orient the boys to start passing the barca way and in some games the big guns like Drogba, Lukaku, Malouda, Lampard and Anelka can be used to get strategic goals.
Luckily for us we have Sturridge who is young, skillful and powerful and can adapt to any system we choose to play, the problem is Torres, if only we didn't buy Torres then a front line of Lukaku, Sturride and Mata would have been fantastic with the other power players I mentioned above coming in as subs.
Josh should also be allowed to flourish.
Finally, imo if AVB does his job well I see us making a strong challenge for the pl, the worst case scenario is finishing third behind Utd and City. I also think Liverpool we finish above Arsenal this season.
My ideal first team selections would be:
cech
bos ivan terry cole
ram mikel josh
drogba sturridge mata
I will like to use this opportunity to thank the creators of this sight for giving us an opportunity to come together and interact freely... good luck everyone.
This is my first post.
Should we change tactics?

I would have love Danny boy to be played in his rightful position, he scored most of his goals at Bolton coming through the middle, although he has shown that he can attack from the flanks too.

Not a bad article. The reasons you give are why I wanted us to sign Aguero rather than Torres.
However now we have him, I'll back him when he plays whatever!

Brummie I guess you are right, we have to support him.

The trick is to create space for Torres and all our forwards. And we can do that by intelligent movement off the ball and using full width. Then we can make all the creative passes in the world.
It really is very simple - can't understand why I'm not manager

Spot on. Ive said this many many times before. We're not making space for Torres. He's getting crowded out by a) our own players b) opposition defenders
Put this along with our painfully slow and predictable build up player, no wonder Torres cant seem to score.. no wonder our forwards all flopped last season. It doesnt take a genius to work out that the power & creativity we lost 2 years ago with ballack deco joe cole belletti has affected us. anyone who says otherwise is just in denial. we're now weak in midfield in terms of creativity and power hence why we're not dominating games anymore however the creativity issue is getting addressed.
can anyone remember the last game we played where you thought at the end of it " we dominated from start to finish and scored a bundle of goals to boot"
I cant.
either we dominate games and dont score or we score a couple of goals but not playing that well.
ive no issue with not scoring goals if we've played well with the correct tempo etc but we dont seem to be even playing well. we're very very one dimensional.
