I don't believe Wenger is the incompetent

dithering fool some of you here paint him out to be. Self-preservation, I believe, is #1 on every managers priority list so of course most would do what is in their power to ensure the right signings are made, even if takes tens of millions above valuation to secure a player.

Look at Mourinho. While you could argue his squad was still relatively strong (CL semi finalists) without Costa & Fabregas, he still felt the need to throw £55m at the both of them with the windfall Luiz's sale provided. Why? He has his interests at heart. If he doesn't do well, he knows Roman will be looking across Europe for a replacement. And it's the same story for every top club manager on the planet.

That's why I think it's ridiculous that people assume Wenger willingly chose to penny pinch 8 years on the bounce, knowing major flaws existed in the squad yet decided to do nothing about it summer after summer?

Surely if the rumored funds were there, he'd fully utilize them like any sane manager in his position would? Which begs the question ... is it all down to him like some of you would have us believe? Absolutely not..

This is all speculation but can it be possible that Kroenke and Gazidis both gave Wenger assurances that his job would be safe all the way back in 2006, as long as Wenger took the flak from fans silently and made it seem to everyone all decisions regarding signings were down to him? And in that time he'd have to make do with youth products and unknown foreign prospects?

I don't believe Wenger is in control. No sane manager in his position can sit there and watch the same old shower of s##t year on end and yet do nothing about it.

Thoughts?

Arsenal haven't looked like a Wenger team since Fabregas left. Personally, I think Wenger has secretly lost faith in his own vision but sticks to his principles to save face.

And what exactly is a Wenger team? One that wins trophies, which Fabregas NEVER helped us do, or the one our current crop of players have done?

I think it's more the ability to dominate possession and therefore matches, not something we've consistently done since he left. Ok, when we had him we didn't win anything, but we were FAR more enjoyable to watch imo. And if we had actually had a consistently solid defense when he was here we would've won a few trophies I'd say.

The style of play and the quality of football. Even when you weren't winning anything you'd always be competitive vs the top teams, go far in the CL and were close to the title a couple of years.

Now it's top 4 and last 16, low quality football and getting trounced by top teams.

Wenger is a self serving .

I fail to see how a reference to another manager's working methods at another club (Mourinho at Chelsea) disproves a well-based and time-proven suspicion about Wenger's indecisiveness and, I dare say, ineptitude, in addressing the issues at Arsenal.

Oh yeah they've held money back . Here you go Wenger go and spend £15m on a 17/18 year old that hasn't above League One. Here's another £16 for Chambers he isn't proven yet and doesn't look comfortable at right back but why not. Oh what's that you say £42m on a play maker that struggles to last 60 mins in a less physical league, when everyone can see we need a defensive midfielder and a striker, 'go ahead'.

If any of what you said did actually turn out to be true I'd hate Wenger even more than I currently do for being a spineless sell out which is worse than the self serving I currently see him as.
