Given the reminiscing the last few days and various comments, it got me thinking about the merits of Dave Jones and Mick McCarthys promotion teams.
Micks team clearly gained promotion in a more emphatic style, winning the thing outright, but was it the best team man for man, or was it more down to the management?
So lets see what people think, pick an 11 from those respective sides.
Goalkeepers
Matt Murray, Wayne Hennessey
Defence
Lee Naylor, Paul Butler, Joleon Lescott, Denis Irwin, Richard Stearman, Stephen Ward, Kevin Foley, Neill Collins, Christophe Berra
Midfield
Paul Ince, Colin Cameron, Alex Rae, Shaun Newton, Mark Kennedy, Kevin Cooper, Karl Henry, Matt Jarvis, Michael Kightly, Dave Edwards, David Jones
Attack
Kenny Miller, Nathan Blake, Dean Sturridge, George Ndah, Sylvan Ebanks Blake, Chris Iwelumo, Andy Keogh

DJ, I agree to a point but can't help wondering how things would have turned out had we not lost Murray and lescott for the whole season.

I think the worst moment under Jones, was when we were in 2nd place, with a seemingly unassailable 11 point lead over WBA, and threw it away. We had a fairly strong side, on paper, which had been reinforced by the shrewd appointment of Cedric Roussel (sp?). I can remember the disappointment to this day.

*Not the signing of Cedric, the missing out on automatic promotion.

That season was unreal, and to lose out to Albion must have been unbearable for the wolvo lads.
Sturbridge was phenomenal, 21 goals in 29 games, he and Blake were very good, alas the back ups were not so good.
After that season I think everyone just about hit rock bottom and felt we would never ever gain promotion.

The biannual Doyle to boro rumour has surfaced at last, now the transfer window is really open.

The McCarthy “quote” Bute posted earlier confused me so much I’ve just checked out what he actually said.....
“There’s a number of issues. One, he’s out of our league in terms of what we would spend on wages,” he said.
“And two, Jez Moxey the chief executive at Wolves is a good pal of mine and there’s as much chance of me jumping in the Thames naked as there is him loaning him out to me when they’re in eighth spot and we’re in second and taking a hit on his wages.
“‘Yes Mick, we’ll loan you Kevin Doyle, we’ll also take a subsidy. You just give us 10% of his wages and you can have him’. I don’t think there’s much chance of that at all.”

It wasn't me that referenced that quote, Tatter! I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, other than on this thread.
It was Je Suis Charlie Farley (U8869)
The quote I mentioned was the Holloway one.

Apologies Bute but if you and Wolfgang will keep changing your user names what do you expect! Are you in fact one and the same person?

It's called "Freedom of Speech", Tatter.
Holloway said McCarthy was the best manager in the division by a country mile, and then some, and I simply reported it, as I thought it was an interesting observation from someone who'd just seen his side steam-rollered by the guy.

I was working with over twenty Albion fans in a factory at the time. Jones cost me a lot of grief.
