When is a penalty a penalty....or not?

Five games this weekend with 8 controversial penalty decisions.....and if the referees involved were doing any of the other four games than they one they did.....the league table would have a totally different look this morning!

One of the main arguments for introducing goal-line technology was that, with so many millions of pounds on the line, these calls or missed-calls, were critical to theweel-being of clubs, especially those in the EPL.

But leaving decsions like penalty and offside calls to the discretion of match officials, happens many, many more times in a season than a goal-line incident. Say about 30 to 1 or more over the course of a season.

Based on this 'money-at-stake argument' surely it's time for manager's challenges, especially now that technology will allow this to happen in mere minutes?

I agree, idk if teams should get so many challenges each half like Tennis or if the Ref can just call for video replays when they aren't sure.

Personally the latter could bring in more criticism of refs then they currently get, imagine if they refuse to as for video help on a controversial incident?

The biggest issue is speed, more stoppages in play is not what we want to see in football. So how fast could a an official with fast video replay of incidents get information to the ref though an ear piece?

We need a trial game so these people who say it would slow down the game can see it doesn't. When there is a decision which nobody is sure of you have both sets of players crowding the referee, that takes up more time than a guy watching a reply a relaying it back to the ref.

The ref wants to award a penalty but the replay shows it wasn't, did it take up more time than taking a penalty which shouldn't have been?

Etc

To those who think it would slow play...have you ever totalled the time a free-kick takes nowadays? Especially one just outside the 'box'? And what about corner kicks? Add up all those seconds and minutes and you'll be very surprised at just how much 'playing' time is lost over the course of a game. I've done it in several games this season and found the average 'lost' time to be as much as 18.17 minutes and as little as 10.39...................and that's not counting stoppages in play for injuries, throw-ins and substitutions. And here we were thinking a game lasted 90+ minutes!

One challenge per team per half with two officials in a review booth reviewing the incident would negate the need for players to further delay the game by harassing the referee.

Since money (and possible relegation/promotion) is the overiding factor here, I think this will be the norm in the not-too-distant future.
