David Beckham

This is not a wum, I feel quite strong with some of my views from time to time but I stand by my decision on this one.

Was David Beckham world class? Or did we as English football fans label him world class because we wanted him to be world class?

I personally think he was and is the most overrated English footballer ever to come out of England and the inky reason people say he was world class is because of the incredible amounts of biased hype that overwhelmed the Beckham brand.

maybe so, but to have the accolade of finishing runner up twice, suggests that it wasnt a fluke and the bloke maybe had a bit more talent than the OP is giving him.

I think you have a very strict definition of world class.

It was a pretty short window but Owen was up there with some of the best of them for a couple of seasons.

Takes a pretty special player to still be wanted as he leaves Madrid rather than be discarded during a galactico era as well.

Beckham not Owen.

In my opinion, not quite. Very close, and pretty amazing what he could do in dead ball situations and from the wing, this he was the best in the world, but i just feel he had so much missing from his overall game to just get into that bracket.

I don't get this logic of having to be an all-round talented player to be world class. If you are nothing but a poacher but score a hat-trick a game then you're world class, no question.

Agree with SAF here, think Beck's celebrity status actually makes people forget his footballing ability. Never the best in the world, but definitely a top class player without doubt.

Becks is one of those players whose overall contribution belies his overall technique; I always think a good measure of a players natural football ability is how they’d fare playing in central midfield. Now some players are just talented players but then you get players who would struggle in central midfield but excel in a position they were born to play and Becks was born to play on the right wing (in his era).

I hated all that nonsense talk of playing Becks in the middle, I just don’t think he was cut out for it and equally I didn’t think it got the best from him. Becks wasn’t ‘world class’ in the sense you’d expect these players to mesmerise you with what they can do on the ball but he was a very effective player and a very specialist one. Beckham had limitations but his delivery was so good it made up for them and he played to his strengths.

I don’t think he’d be as effective in today’s systems but in a 4-4-2 Becks was world class IMO.

All of that.

David Plat said that you either have to be very good at a lot of things or exceptional at one thing to make it.

What he did for the LA Galaxy and MLS should not be discounted by you football snobs. That in addition to his time and performances at utd, real and ac milan should prove he was a world class player and professional.

Beckham was a class player

Not a world class footballer but a world class sportsperson.

He was one of the best ENG players but come on he wasn't near the world's best at any time in his career.. he was one of the best at free kicks though
