Basso lifts lid on City departure

Former City goalkeeper Adriano Basso has spoken about his Bristol City departure for the first time.

The 36-year-old fell out of favour with ex-Robins boss Gary Johnson in May 2009 before being released in March last year.

For the next nine months, the ambitious Brazilian was left to train alone in a Bristol park while waiting for a top club to come in for his services.

But Basso, who has always stated his unwavering belief that he will represent his country, rejected several overtures from lower league clubs before accepting the offer of a six-month deal from Wolves boss Mick McCarthy in January this year.

"I had a situation at Bristol [City] and decided against signing a contract," he explained to the Sunday Mercury. "They offered me three years, but I decided not to sign for my own reasons.

"I told my agent that I had proven myself in the Championship, so I was looking for an opportunity in the Premiership. I told him if he came back with anything outside the Premiership, I didn't want it.

"I believe if you don`t choose to go for what you want, you stay with what you have. I paid the price by waiting for six months until Wolves came along.

"If you have a goal in life, you have to stick with it. It was a long time without income but I wanted to stick with my choice. It was hard."

Basso faces more uncertainty with his short term contract expiring at the end of the month while McCarthy has yet offer him a new deal.

So far as I know he still hasn't played let alone proved himself in the premiership sorry AB you cocked it up big time (for the club and yourself)when you decided to wait til after Weale had left before stateing you wouldn't sign a new contract(and I doubt if he has much chance of being the Brazilian keeper either. Shame init really.

can understand his conviction, but sometimes an opportunity just comes sailing by. A 3 year contract with a clause "can move to a premiership club" would have seemed the best way to have gone........but thats hindsight

Saying he had a 'situation' at City and didn't sign 'for his own reasons' isn't really lifting the lid Hawk - its what we already knew.
What was the 'situation'?

There were so many rumours going on it was hard to say what really happened what I had heard at first was that Weale was going to be first choice GK then he left and AB refused to sign a new contract. Now if it had been implied that AB would sign a new contract if he was assured of being first choice then didn't when Weale left that might have caused the bust up, afterall his agent was trying to get him to sign a new contract at the gate and that could well have caused misunderstandings Agent says this is what you have to do to get the signiture - player decides differently. What really happened doubt if we will ever know unless GJ, AB, SL and the agent all give a press conference which I can't see happening.

ps the Basso lifts lid on City departure was the headline of the article I lifted from the newspaper, not my personal headline.

So at least it wasn't little Lee's fault then... !!

bcr&w of course it was GJ was going to make LJ first choice for every position on the team sheet. At least if you read some of the almost hysterical rantings posted on 606 in the past, not the best player to wear the red shirt but also far from the worst.
