guys iam fond of reading articles like most influential persons of the world. Now i had an idea to make an article on 'the most influential sportsmen of all time'.
criteria is clear. the sportsman should have a major influence in the game,the sports should be a famous and popular game in the world and not in the region only.
e.g in our times popular games are football,cricket,wrestling wwe and tennis, i will only include players from these sports in my list of top 10 most influential sportsmen,

Maradona
Federer

Tendulkar
Nadal

Most influential in what way? Michael Jordan is probably the biggest.. Massive in the states and worldwide and his clothing is internationally recognised.
David Beckham is probably up there too as is Tiger Woods and as Mondieu said probably Tony Hawk due to the games.
I would then say people like Roger Federer, Muhammad Ali, Pete Sampras, Wayne Gretzky, Kobe Bryant, Ronaldinho,Messi,Ronaldo
