He said Arsenal were still title challengers when we were 4th and now we are the main challengers in second place. OK, we are still 7 points behind and played an extra game and its unlikely we will genuinely challenge, but a few weeks ago I would have said 2nd place now would be a ridiculous expectation but here we are, so who knows, stranger things have happened.

Tyke, how could you go for Doohan ahead of Gardner, Lawson, Roberts, Spencer or Schwantz?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because he won 5 titles in a row, and would have won maybe twice that if not for injury.
He also rode at a time when most of the best riders ever were around, Shwantz, Gardner, Lawson etc.
He beat them consistently, totally dominated entire weekends, every practice, pole, lap record, race won. He still holds records for most wins in a season, and he tamed the beast that most riders couldnt handle.
Spencer was another thing altogether! Sadly he was only around for 3 seasons really, but that double in '85 will never be repeated.
Rossi has the stats, but most of his wins came when there was no real opposition, and whenever there was, he lost ( To Lorenzo, Stoner, Marc of course and even Nicky).
For pure talent I think Stoner is the man, but he was never consistent enough or focused. Marquez could well be on his way to being the greatest ever, this season will be revealing!

Well, penchood means 'sisterfυcker'.
Maureen only had one sister, called Teresa, she died aged 37.
So, to me that isnt funny. But you lot keep laughing if you want.

Fair enough, I didn't know that, and I highly doubt anybody else did either.

Other than his two near misses a couple of years earlier, Doohan only really came to the fore when the others were on their way out.
Only Schwantz was left by the time he won his maiden title, and by then no one could touch the Hondas.
Doohan made the most of a huge power void in the 500s.
Or maybe it's just that I basically didn't like him that much. Though I still remember that hair-raising fall on the Corkscrew, balls of steel.

In 92 he won the first four races straight before that injury. That field included Rainey,Shwantz,Gardner and Lawson etc.
I cant think of any rider who could have done that to that field. Personalties dont bother me, I know a lot of people dont like Stoner, but I just watch the riding, not the rider.

Fair dos, he'd have walked it if he'd stayed fit, but in fiarness it was the year they rolled out the NSR 500, Honda was virtually untouchable. It took the others more than half the season to get their big bang engines on the track. As for Lawson, it his final year and on a Cagiva (and still managed a win in the rain.)
I hear you on styles, but if it's on entertainment value it would've been hard to see beyond Schwantz, Mamola when he was still around.
I stand by my earlier comment: great rider as he was, Doohan benefitted massively from a void of top riders on competitive enough bikes. Very much doubt he'd have managed anything remotely similar with the riders I mentioned earlier on the track and on bikes that could go toe to toe with the Hondas.

We aren't winning the league. Top 3 and the FA Cup would be good.

Top 2 has got to be the aim now. 3rd place would be a bottle job with our run in.
