The Kris Commons conundrum

I'd like to preface this article by saying that Kris has been a great servant to Celtic both on and off the pitch these last few years. There's no doubt that on his game, he has been a great addition to the squad with a huge number of goals from midfield, culiminating in a superb return to win us last years SPL title.

But I wonder where he fits into this current Celtic team with the new style of play we have? I find that I can't really justify his inclusion ahead of the likes of GMS who has started like a house on fire with goals, assists, pace and trickery or Johansen, who for me has been POTY. Add Stuart Armsrong into the equation who I think will continue to improve and you find the 3 midfield positions in the attacking third locked down.

I think we play some of our most fluid and dangerous football when the 3 aforementioned players are running at opposition backlines supplemented by Gudietti or Griffiths up top with Biton and Brown anchoring the midfield. It is noticeable when Kris plays that the momentum of our attacking play is lost on the counter attack as he takes a lot of time to decide what to do or finds himself having to turn away from goal to maintain possession of the ball. He does possess a great passing range and an eye for goal but he frustrates me when I watch him play for us this season.

It is worth pointing out that he has been a great servant to the club but we have an opportunity to play an attacking unit filled with pace and flair whose play can get you on the edge of your seat. I think opposition teams are more frightened of us when we have pace in the side, they know that they have to be at it for 90 minutes or we will grind them down with our energetic play and superior fitness.

I also think that this is a big part of Ronnys vision for us and I'm not clear where that leaves Kris?

Will Kris be happy with a horses for course approach though, going from being the main man to a squad rotation option?

He's just signed a 2 year extension.

I know that but that doesn't mean that he thinks he's signing up to be a bit part player

I suspect all of that would have been explained during his long protracted negotiations

"as he still does things others can't"

For that reason alone he should be in the squad, agree that he's no automatic first pick but he'll always do a job when picked, his form is pretty consistent.

Kris has 7 goals in his last 11 games(13 for the season even though he hasn't played as much as usual), I agree that he doesn't suit our style of play that well but his knack for getting goals has stopped us dropping points and until we get a striker that can bang in 25 a season he is essential to our squad in my opinion.

79 goals in 145 games is a incredible record for a player who isn't even a striker.

Slowing down our play has helped us. At the start we had players running about like headless chickens and were getting hammered from it. We now look like a team and commons provides the threat we badly need.

Commons is a terrific player to have around. He's not going to start every game and more often than not will be on the bench but he's still a valuable member of the squad.

He is our best player and as per usuall, when not playing we lack that creativity. Get him on NOW. Oh and get that plonker Effy off now. Why ohwhythe fook does he get a game. He is one of the worse players ever to have worn the hoops.
