Justified or a scapegoat papering over other cracks..?
I guess this summer we will see the influence of Mitchell.

How can a director of football mess up a clubs finances, unless wasting money on useless players is taken into consideration, then he's bang to rights.

I suppose it all depends on the role of a DoF. Is he making the recommendations? Is he the one left to do the negotiations with the selling club?

What is the point of a Director of Football if all they do is recommend a particular player? All that makes them is a scout!
The DoF role must include input on fee exprectations, wages etc, otherwise it is a superflous role surely?

That's the thing, I don't know what they specifically do or how it works. Do they sit down with the manager or 'head coach' and have a chat about the 'coaches' playing style, tactics etc and go out and hunt for someone with the required traits? (What clearly didn't happen when we signed Soldado). If not then I don't see the point of them.
They should just sack them all. Someone tell Levy to pay me £35k p/a to play Football Manager and I'll find him quality players at quality prices.

I do not want to blow my own trumpet but I have been talking about this for months.
He will leave at the end of the season by mutual consent he is not getting sacked. I believe he is going to Russia Zenit not Capello.
Baldinis main role was as a negotiator he would talk to the club before Collecott or Levy. We had no scouting department when Baldini joined however he was not solely responsible for all of the deals apart from Lamela obviously. It was believed when he signed that he also had good scouting contacts however it turned out to be someone else at Roma with these contacts! Football hey?
We did have a committee system where several people sat and discussed transfers, Baldini,Sherwood, Ferdy, Levy, Collecott and we used a computer based system (like football manager only more complex)
Reports/media can talk about Baldini being in trouble but in truth they have no clue how it works so they would have no clue on his job role.

I'm glad we're moving away from the DoF role. All it generally means is the manager gets players he may never have wanted, and may feel pressure to play them due to transfer fee pecking order. I'm convinced this was the case with Soldado and is probably the case with Lamela.
If the manager is worth anything of sorts, he will know the players he wants, needs, and the scouts can do it the old fashioned way....
