Dundee United sealed the league title with a stunning and surprising victory against what was in truth a lacklustre Aberdeen side at Tannadice yesterday.
It was actually quite an odd game in that there were spells in the match that were lacking in entertainment and could probably best be described as turgid, but at the same time there were enough chances to make the game an enjoyable afternoon's entertainment.
It was fitting though that the best bit of quality in the game resulted in the goal that settled it. Muirhead impressed me yesterday with his movement and the way he tries to spin off the shoulder of the last man and he peeled away from Taylor to create space for himself. However it needed the right pass and it was a delicious pass from Souttar to find him, another who was very impressive in his new midfield anchor position. Muirhead smashed it home with an impeccable finish.
The Dons will probably feel aggrieved at not getting something from the game. Ash Taylor in particular squandered two or three fantastic opportunities. They had a couple of other decent chances too. Having said that, United had a few good chances too to extend the lead and, on another day, our final ball would have been better and we could have created more chances.
As for performances, I thought all of the back four were terrific and again it's promising to see Paul Dixon returning to the kind of form that he showed in his first stint at the club. My mate had Fojut as man of the match but I thought there were a few candidates. Souttar certainly deserved a shout and first half particularly I liked what Muihead contributed.
Credit to Jackie as well, he got everything right yesterday. His formation was interesting, with us initially lining up in a narrow 4-1-3-2 formation with Ciftci starting from a wider position when we lost the ball. With Spittal going off it became more of a 4-3-3 and probably rightly so with Connolly on. I know I keep banging on about Muirhead here but having a forward who not only is willing to work the defence hard doing the defensive work but also wants to pull on their shoulders and get in behind is very refreshing.
Anyway, a much needed boost for everyone after what had appeared a very bleak looking end to the season and there are certainly positives going forward into next season on the back of this. Hopefully we can go up to Inverness mid week and keep the momentum going.
Two final points. Firstly congratulations to Celtic for winning the league. I'm sure you'd have preferred to win it on the park rather than through our result, but I hope it didn't diminish your enjoyment.
Secondly, a wee mention for the Aberdeen fans who stayed to the end and cheered their team off the park at the end. Their players certainly deserved that after their efforts over the season.
Mon the Terrors.

I'll imagine your relieved as that result should mean you can't be overtaken by the Mighty Dees.
One good turn deserves another and all that

Tom
I was getting a bit nervous about that.
8 points ahead with only 9 available to them (12 to us). Hopefully a win on Tuesday will settle that matter, and my bet with NNH.

Hopefully this signals some sort of revival in the manager's ability. He is still young so is bound to make mistakes. If we can go the rest of the season unbeaten then I'd keep him for the summer. As long as he's under strict orders to sort out what seems like fitness issues.
