Focus on Wimmer

Sky have wrote an article about our new cb Wimmer.

Within this article they praise him by saying he was one of the top cb's in the bundesliga last season but then go on to say he probably won't be first choice at Spurs...........why the hell not!!! We are dog shiite at the back.

Things like this this really grinds my gears. After a full pre season any defensive new signing should be our first choice give our record last season otherwise why the hell have we signed them.

Rant over

I'll tell you what grinds my gears - not fully engaging the clutch before changing.

My 4 year old could do a job in our back line, song this ponce isn't good enough to get in he might as well píss off back to sausage land. No more passengers.

Which centre backs would everyone keep?

As much as Vertonghen winds me up, I can think of three I'd like to see gone before him - The Neanderthal, Coco and the Tranny

Yeah, that four looks pretty spot on. If we could nab Alderwereild and lose Vertonghen I'd be quite happy - it'd have to be proven PL pedigree. Vlaar is on a free too.

Agreed about protection. It's hard to blame the fullbacks though, they are encouraged to be wingers. Luke Shaw was quoted saying he was basically a winger under Poch. Often they are left 2 v 1.

To me it all stems from the 4231 we play, and the personnel employed in it.

We usually have four forwards at any one time, none of which are naturally inclined to help out defensively. Compounded by actively being encouraged in to central areas, and often leaving us terribly exposed wide. Once that happens it's musical chairs - whether the fullback or one of the CMs go to close gaps, another gap pops up elsewhere. All get pulled about, and we look ragged.

The two lads in midfield do their best, but neither are naturally defensive. Bentaleb the more of the two, but he's no enforcer. Mason is full of running, but defensively not a natural. In another styjle of play, they'd probably be ok together, but when given so much work to do its difficult....cover both fullbacks, drop between the CBs if they split, close down the space where our wingers/ten should be.

It's clear he won't sacrifice his style of play - I see it only working one of two ways:

Way 1
Mason is replaced by a sounder defensive player. Of players available its be Dembele, but ideally I'd want a naturally defensive player. Someone who will sit, can help out the CBs and let Bentaleb take Masons role.

Way 2
We play with a disciplined midfielder in the 10 role, rather than Eriksen. Its give us more protection defensively as we'd have three rather than two. Again, Dembele the natural choice with what is available - and we have played this way last season and looked defensively sound - but I'd rather he sat deep and Mason was the one pushed a bit further forward.
