was reading a recent article where verts gets a lot of stick and im not sure why people think vertonghen is a bad player, hes by far our best defender. there are some stats here to back that up.
also it appars as limited as Fazio is he is good at the basic defensive duties such as heading and blocking etc.

Good defender, with the right players around him,

Still our best defender. Just a question of whether he's up for it.

My point was that he is statistically our best defender. I said he was underrated and thats exactly what I meant I don't get confused.
Yes our defence is leaky but he got into the prem team of the season in his first year with us then had a mediocre second season, partly down to sherwood (sandro also had issues with sherwood but didn't get the same stick as people have their favourites) and personally think bar a few lacsadaical mistakes he had a solid 3rd season.
You may criticise him for not being a leader of men but that's not his job. He's not captain. He just has to lead by example so if he cuts out a couple of mistakes I think he does just that.
he's a victim of his own success if his first and second season were the other way round people would be saying what a good player we have instead of focusing on his rare bad moments.

his first season wasn't that good though.. made team of the year probably because he scored some goals.
he played half the season at lb and was woeful.

He's not underrated. He scored a few goals in his first season and people started raving about him. Now people are starting to see what he's actually lika defensively and revised those opinions. He's not crap IMO, but he's not great either.
The reason why he does get the stick he gets is because he's got pretty much all the basic tools to do much better. The height, reasonably built, pace is alright, prime age for a defender, he can use the ball well too. Unfortunately he hasn't yet developed the leadership and focus to put this together to make a very good defender.

Chronic,
I honestly think he would make a terrible DM. IMO his weaknesses are that he doesn’t track back quick enough, he’s often out of position, he has a tendency to be lazy and at times he lacks energy – everything you need to be a basic DM..

OP, there is no disputing he is probably our best CB “statistically” as it stands – but considering his competition, this isn’t saying much. And in answer to your question, no I do not believe he is under-rated. Over-rated at times – but not under-rated.
