Our Squad

With pre-season friendlies around the corner, just 10 days before the Asia Cup, it is maybe worthwhile looking at our squad and reminding ourselves of the PL squad rules.

As you know, we can name 25 players in our squad, with a maximum of 17 non-HomeGrown players. Any player born on or after 1st January 1994 are exempt from the squad rules.

GOALKEEPERS
Petr Cech
Wojeich Szczesny
Damian Emiliano Martinez

RIGHT BACKS
Mathieu Debuchy
**Hector Bellerin

LEFT BACKS
Kieran Gibbs
Nacho Monreal

CENTRE BACKS
Laurent Koscielny
Per Mertesacker
Gabriel Paulista
**Calum Chambers

(so far - 9 squad places filled, 3 HG)

MIDFIELD
Francis Coquelin
Mikel Arteta
Jack Wilshere
Aaron Ramsey
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain

Santi Cazorla
Mesut Ozil

ATTACKERS
Alexis Sanchez
Theo Walcott
Danny Welbeck

Olivier Giroud

(20 squad places filled, 9 HG, 11 of 17 non-HG places filled)
(Don't worry too much about positions players are grouped in, many can play a variety of roles)

There are a host of players I haven't listed above:
David Ospina
Carl Jenkinson
Tomas Rosicky
Mathieu Flamini
Joel Campbell
Wellington Silva
Yaya Sanogo

would all require a squad place.
Ospina and Campbell are expected to be sold.
Jenkinson and Sanogo look likely to be loaned out.
Wellington is likely to be either sold or loaned, I assume.
Rosicky and Flamini could well be added to the 20 players above.

There are others who could be considered, but won't need to be named in the 25 man squad due to their age:
Chuba Akpom
Serge Gnabry
Gedion Zelalem
Isaac Hayden
Krystian Bielik
Julio Pleguezuelo
Dan Crowley
Alex Iwobi

So, in conclusion, we are comfortably within squad regulations and have significant squad room for new signings.
For me, there is room for additions in defence, midfield and up front although I can not see more than 2 more signings and wouldn't rule out no more.

Flamini should be long gone by now. Disgusting that we gave him a 3 year contract

Happy with squad, except for Flamini, the lack of another dm and striker. At least one of those is needed given the usual injuries during October and November

Do other teams do these kind of lists? As much as I'd like to see how we compare, I reckon they don't bother and just wish for signings anyway since its next to impossible to fill up your squad under these rules.

I think there should be a balance in signings. Don't sign a player just to sign, like Spurs and Liverpool have learned. This list helps with seeing where the weak spots are.

Also despite the fact he will probably never play for us, is Wellington Silva not classed as home grown? I thought he signed just before he turned 18?

Not at all saying we should just sign anybody willy nally, the total opposite in fact. We need to stop this mentality of wanting to sign players in order to fill squad depth - I don't see any of the top, title winning teams doing that. We need to sign first team quality, starting XI players. And if what we've got can't step up, then they become the depth.

Yes they do.
Liverpool are 3 players over the limit already, btw.

In Liverpools fairness, come 1 september they could cut any 3 players and not particularly affect their squad strength. Average throughout.
