UFC 189 Mcgregor Vs Mendes Predictions.

One of the most anticipated events is upon us fight fans. UFC 189 has rolled into town and what a card is promises to be. The card is full of some very interesting fights but the two i will be focusing on in this article will be the main event.

Conor Mcgregor vs Chad Mendes
Conor Mcgregor is a polarizing character to say the least but what he has done that nobody can criticise is bring attention and much needed hype back into the UFC. The arrogance,ego and his sharp tongue have made him one of the main attractions in the UFC and his performances in the octagon have only reinforced his position as the most talked about fighter in the world. What he brings to the table in terms of skills is a very diverse and unpredictable striking arsenal. He can throw punches,kicks and knees from all angles whilst maintaining perfect poise and focus. He has dispatched his last three opponents with the calculated precision of a born killer and come Saturday night he will hope to add one more head to his collection by becoming the interim champion.

Chad Mendes took this fight at short notice but if you think that will put him at a disadvantage,you are sourly mistaken. Mendes is an athlete through and through and he has worked his way to become the #2 in the division. Possessing a decorated wrestling background, Mendes holds power in both hands and is well versed on his back or on top of an opponent. His explosiveness helps him negate his lack of reach and his wrestling ability make him a multi faceted fighter. Having only lost twice in his career to the current champion, Mendes will feel that he will get the opportunity to put those defeats to bed by dispatching Conor Mcgregor.

How I see the fight going:
This is stylistically a very intriguing match up mainly due to Mcgregors lack of wrestling ability. Mendes will be the first wrestler Conor has faced so there are questions surrounding how he will handle such problems. Mcgregor of course has the tools to deal with them comfortably, maintaining a good reach and size advantage and the better striking, he will be hoping to finish the fight on the feet. Personally I think Mcgregor will get taken down numerous times during the fight. Mendes will be comfortable holding him down and working him on the ground.Also, Conor has never been 5 rounds, so faced with an opponent who will not stop coming for 5 will be a difficult challenge for him. Of course Conor still has the power in his hands which at any given moment could put Mendes to sleep. Mcgregor therefore only really has on route to victory where as Mendes can win a points victory or he could hurt Conor with a big shot,which as we have seen with lamas, he does possess. There is just no way Conor goes 5 without being taken down, so that tells me if Conor wins it will come within the first 2-3. However I think Mendes is a smart fighter and he will be patient and know that once he has Conor down, the fight will take on a different turn. The fact that Conor is southpaw will cause Chad trouble and Conors reach advantage will give Mendes some serious headaches. Ultimately though I see the first round being cagey and then Mendes getting into his rhythm and taking Conor down. Once he takes him down I think he will take away Mcgregors heart and although Mcgregor will have success on the feet,I see Mendes taking it on points.
