Alan Shearer scored 283 top flight goals in his career over 559 top flight games.
Wayne Rooney is currently 29 (turning 30 October) and has scored 185 in his career so far over 402 premier league games..
Alan Shearer retired at the end of the 2005/2006 season, a few months short of his 36th birthday. He played in the premier league/division 1 over a spam of 19 seasons (87/88 to 05/06). Over this time he averaged 14.89 league goals a season.
Wayne Rooney has played top flight football for a period spanning over 13 seasons so far (02/03 to 14/15). Over this time he has averaged 14.23 league goals a season.
If Wayne Rooney plays top flight football until he is 35, and plays the same number of top flight seasons as Alan Shearer, continuing on at his current rate, he would score (rounded down to nearest whole number) 270 league goals over his career. A difference that would be of 13 league goals over almost 2 decades of football.
In Alan Shearer's highest scoring seasons, he scored 34 league goals in 94/95, 31 league goals in 93/94 and 31 league goals again in 95/96.
In Wayne Rooney's highest scoring seasons, he has scored 27 league goals in 11/12, 26 league goals in 09/10 and 17 league goals in 13/14.
It is incredible how close these two players are statistically, however all the numbers are weighing in Alan Shearer's favour, and his phenomenal record being superior to Wayne Rooney's when the dust settles.
My questions are therefore obviously these.
- Do people think that Wayne Rooney CAN catch Alan Shearer?
- Do you think he WILL catch Alan Shearer?
- Do you think Wayne Rooney will be able to play for as long/longer than Alan Shearer in the top flight, given the advances in sports science, but also taking into account the increase in the requirements of physical fitness in the game today?
Admins can you please include the Everton, Newcastle, Southampton and Blackburn Rovers boards in this thread if possible due to the players playing for these clubs? Never multiboarded an article before so unsure how to do it.
Can/Will Rooney catch Shearer?

Yeah but other than one season......all those Shearer goals counted for nothing other than personal glory.
Rooney has goals and medals to show for his work.
Alan Shearer was an absolute numpty for turning down United and I bet it eats away at him at night.

Ronaldo has had, by far, superior players surrounding him than Shearer ever has.
And I can't stand Shearer.

Same could be said for Rooney in comparison to Shearer.

He'd swap 100 of those goals for a CL winners medal and a few more PL titles though.
Should have joined Fergie's Utd when he had chance. We'd have been even more dominant with him.

.............
Yes it could.
That is why I take into account their different roles that they have played during the years.
As others have said, had Rooney played as a main striker, there would be very little in it.

No I don't think so.
I believe Rooney has a max of 3 seasons left as a top-level striker. After that he'll either move into midfield or take a lucrative move abroad.
You also have to consider that at a club as big as United, they'll always look to evolve and improve. If his performances slide they won't hesitate to bench him for someone better.

Early Premier League seasons had the likes of Oldham Athletic and Swindon Town in them. I think today's bottom clubs are of far better quality than the lower clubs in the earlier days.
Alan Shearer was a far better striker than Rooney ever was but it's unfair to compare the, both considering how much more competitive the league is now.

I don't think you can judge teams like Oldham's quality in the 90's compared to now. In fact I'd say that they were more likely to beat the top teams then than they are today for a number of reasons. Your talking about more than 20 years ago now.
I think the gap between quality of 1st and 20th is much bigger than 1st and 22nd back then.

Moot point. Rooney got to play against the woeful Sunderland team in 05/06 and the truly pitiful Derby team in 07/08 that managed a record low of 11 points.
As for the record, it's worth noting that Shearer scored about 56 penalties compared to 2nd place Cole who scored 1 I believe.

Sunderland got a 0-0 draw at OT in 05/06 season, I remember that game very well we did everything but score although we did beat them 1-3 away.
