Would be a rubbish signing.

His goalscoring record at this level only looks decent because he scored a load of penalties.

He's not been much good for a few years now, is 30 and in decline.

Johnson does have a dodgy record for injuries, and is probably past his best, yes. But his best was very very good, and there might just be enough left of it for our purposes, I reckon.

For me he would be a reasonable catch, if we simply can't land a young blood firing on all cylinders. If we were going to sign Maynard, I think it would have happened by now.

If we didn't get Maynard, I can't see many other options other than Andy Johnson. I still think the club will be reluctant to pay Yak's wages and he will be reluctant to come to the Championship. One alternative I can think of though is going back in for Beckford. Everton's financial situation must mean that any player is for sale at the right price so we could just bid £4 million for him and I doubt Everton would turn it down. I think he's got similar ability to Maynard but we could get him £2 mil cheaper. And I think he's better than Yak and Johnson.

As for Johnson, wouldn't be overwhelmed but I do think we could do worse but we could also do better. However, I feel this is an option we will only pursue if all other targets fail.
