Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup

Some of you may have seen the news today that Saints are to hold an annual triangular tournament during pre-season, in honour of our late, great owner.

"The 'Memorial Cup' is an innovative competition, which will see Nigel Adkins' team take on a Premier League side, and some top opposition from La Liga in three first class fixtures each lasting 45 high tempo minutes."

Great news, and I'm sure fans will flock to see the spectacle. But what about the Ted Bates Trophy? Does a lot of money and a year of ownership outweigh more than 60 years of service to the club?

I think maybe the West Brom game might be the Ted Bates Trophy, but thats just a hunch.

Liking the sound of this new tournament tho, would be nice for a top 5 prem team to come down.

To be fair Ted Bates already has a statue outside the stadium, that is the a bigger honour than a pre-season tournament in my opinion. The Ted Bates trophy started before the statue was commissioned and Markus has nothing to recognise what he did for the club, so i'm all for this new tournament.

This sounds like a really good idea, and of course the blue few could have the Alan Knight drinking tournament at Nottarf!

Will you have a open bus top celebration then with the trophy if you win it?

Well you won't be winning it, Premier League opposition only...

I think the Ted Bates Trophy had already fallen by the wayside in the last couple of seasons, which seemed a shame. I would be happy if it was still awarded after the last friendly of pre-season against any decent quality opposition, but I do think the Memorial Cup is an interesting idea and a fitting tribute to our Markus.

If the premier league oppo is Manure and the La Liga team is Barcelona, I will defo buy a ticket!

Would be great to see Barca stuff Manure again on their way to a narrow defeat in the final to Saints.

Presumably this is a tournament of three halves! If Man U and Barca showed up it really would be a game and a half.

Sounds like a great idea for an entertaining afternoon.
