How they were ridiculed for still being on the front foot although 4-0 nil down at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge?
But now it is the turn of United to rebuild they are beginning to see just how difficult it is to play stylishly and win.
Even City with their big budget could only come second in the PL and be humiliated in Europe last year playing expansively.
Will United go the Chelsea and Liverpool route of functional football?
Probably yes.
So sympathy for van Gaal - yes.
Sympathy for the fans - no.
