It is rumoured the creator had to have someone come in half way through production to finish it for him as the nightmares became too much.

Well oooh, get you.
The colour palate of a game is often overlooked but I think it's pretty important. For example I love the Civilization series but Beyond Earth bores me to tears because everything is just so monochrome. Almost everything in that game is blue and the colours are just muted.
It's also one of the reasons I loved Vice City but didn't like GTA IV. Bright colours and variety of locations just make the game so much more fun to play and explore.
I'm also not a huge fan of mediaeval themes either, so seeing as 90% of them have that as a setting then that doesn't help my opinion.

If you havent check out Shadowrun and Transistor, the later certainly seems to be a western take on a jrpgs

I have Shadowrun and enjoyed what I played which was just a test run. Still have to get back to it. Tactical fun

Shadowrun is a brilliant RPG (also with loads of colours). It kinda reminds me of the old style text games with Xcom style combat.

Only had a chance this weekend to get into it properly, spent Saturday figuring everything out and what best to start with.
Sunday I settled on my powers, was doing great then got my ass handed to me, so went back to the drawing board and took some time to figure out how best to combine spells etc and am now braving the outside world.
But as a game I'm excited to get back to it and it's been a while since a game did that so thanks for the tip RtM, still early days but the game has so many possibilities and i'm looking forward to getting more into it.

Nice. As a tip I would do anything and everything I could in town before trying get to get brave. The levels of enemies is dependant on location like games of old. They do not scale up(or down) depending on your level. I think I waited until I was a level 5 before leaving and still it was a bit of a challenge.
