Players to fit formation or

Formation to fit players???

While enjoying ( sort of) some of the comparisons over recent weeks between Vardy and Kane, and the discussions about who would be better to lead the line for England.......
It led me to think back to the good old days of 4-4-2 formations and picking the players in their chosen roles etc.
Whereas with England recently we seem to be choosing the formation first then sticking players into that formation in roles that they are unaccustomed too.
But we now have 2 good English strikers in prime form who I think would thrive up front together..... I know there were specific doubts about Kane from one specific area in the world 😉. But he is a class player who will only get better with age and experience.
I know it won't happen but what are people's thoughts if England played a 4-4-2 or 4-1-3-2 formation with Kane and Vardy up top?

I personally like to see our starting 11 at the euros a bit like this......

Butland
Clyne
Stones
Smalling
Shaw ( if fit)
Dier ( holding )
Wilshere
Alli
????
Kane
Vardy

Go with youth ( yes I know Vardy isn't youth but I am allowed some poetic licence 😉) we can't do any worse than we have in the past!!!!

It would take a manager with some gonads! Which is unlikely

Nigel Pearson maybe...

Sorry Arro but even though DD is having a good start to the season he is not a patch on Wilshere. So if he us fit he is a certain starter.

I don't know, give Drinky a season and I think by the end of it he's going to be really good. Wilshere is too light weight, he gets knocked off the ball and can't win a tackle.

In answer to your question I would always pick the best players and then a formation to get the most out of them. It’s a bit difficult for England as you have a different squad every time you meet up and various players coming in and out of form. So I can understand the temptation to seek continuity of formation and style of play.

I was only thinking to myself earlier whether the best plan currently for England would be to go for the PL’s most in form strikers. You could do far worse than a Kane/Vardy combination up front and it would probably hurt opposition more than any other partnership. Sturridge is a better player than either, but is always injured and needs to prove his form. Rooney is historically a better player, but is not currently in great form. He also should be played as a number 10 is he’s included at all.

I like the OPs original line up. Personally I’d still pick Hart and Sterling would be in there as one of the wingers/wide forwards.

The midfield area is most up for grabs. I personally think that Barclay and Wilshiere are the future – if the latter stays fit – and Alli looks a great prospect.

Drinkwater has to do a bit more for me. He’s now great in possession and can control the game and pick a pass. He’s also learnt to retain possession when he’s got people around him. I noticed, however, a couple of times when he could have driven at Newcastle with pace and power, but instead chose the easier option to offload. If he could develop this aspect of the game, add a few goals, and become the type of player who could really hurt the opposition then he’d really start to become the complete midfielder. At the moment it still feels a bit too safe.

Doing it foe 1/3 of a season only means its a big risk for a manager Drinky's got plenty of time to stake his place and Albrighton too. If they and we are as well in the new year i am sure Roy will look at them.
