Your darkest football day

What has been your most depressing, heartbreaking day in football?

For me, it was Liverpools Champions League win in 2005. United had finally won a second in that glorious 98-99 season, and looked set to close the gap to 1 at any moment. My gf at the time was a lifelong Liverpool fan, so at half time when they're 3-0 down I'm all consoling "Ah well they got to the final, that's still a damn good showing" while inside I'm jumping up and down YES YES YES YES.

When the pens were over, again I have to fake how I'm really feeling. Haunted me for a while. Still, 18th, 19th, 20th titles eased the pain and then some. That we broke up 18 months later did as well

Set aside tragedies like Munich, Hillsborough, Bradford etc. which were dark days for the human race, let alone football fans.

And please, no abuse, no wumtards, any of that gets deleted, mmmkay?

8-2 against United for certain. After five goals I just wanted the match to be over. Even fergie was embarrassed for us I remember him telling his players to keep celebrations down to a minimum. Made it worse him doing that

To be fair as an arsenal fan we have had our fair share. Cl final where we conceeded two in last 15 mins with ten men. Liverpool Cl after theos run and adebayoir goal. Van persie going to United.

I'd have thought you'd make him a new one to commemorate this year's crushing victory.

Brighton staying the league at the expense of Hereford in about 1997 or whenever.

What a scam that was!

Cant stand south coast teams at the best of times but they somehow managed to stay in the league even though both teams finished on the same points and Hereford had a better GD.

In all the other divisions at the time, GD counted for more than GA. But for some reason, in League 2, back then, GA counted for more. So little Hereford went down and scuzzy Brighton stayed up.

Never forgiven that bloke for wearing that white headband when playing for Brighton back in the 80s.... Big plank he was.

Brighton. Paah!

Carlisle away 1976-77

Travelled 400 mile round trip from Wolverhampton with the game being called off whilst walking to the ground.

Tried again midweek and got beat 2-1, missing the Wolves goal because somebody had a heart attack in the row in front of us.

Rain, more rain, paramedics in huge yellow jackets, 800 miles, not a single point, rain.

Wolves went on to claim the title against Chelsea.
