Known affectionately as "Oly" and "Old Reliable" by the time of her retirement, Olympic had been at sea for 24 years, completed 257 round trips across the Atlantic, and transported 430,000 passengers on her commercial voyages, travelling a staggering 1.8 million miles! Sister ship to RMS Titanic, the Olympic famously served as a WWI troop transporter carrying US and Canadian troops to the war front. It was during this service that Olympic obtained her nickname "Old Reliable," for her trustworthy service on these troop carrying voyages.
Olympic’s most notable achievement during the war was the ramming and sinking of of the German submarine U-103 on May 12, 1918. Olympic was the only merchant ship to sink an enemy warship during the war.
Remember this information quickly, you'll remember the information you find most satisfying to know, and tell people too, have you remembered? What did you learn? What is your best memory of the Olympic?

Violet Constance Jessop (2 October 1887 – 5 May 1971) was an ocean liner stewardess and nurse who achieved fame by surviving the disastrous sinkings of both the RMS Titanic and her sister ship, the HMHS Britannic, in 1912 and 1916 respectively. In addition, she had been on board the RMS Olympic, their other sister ship, when it collided with the protected cruiser HMS Hawke in 1911.

She was the largest ocean liner in the world until interrupted only by the Titanic (which had the same dimensions but higher gross tonnage owing to revised interior configurations).

That collision took place as Olympic and Hawke were running parallel to each other through the Solent. As Olympic turned to starboard, the wide radius of her turn took the commander of the Hawke by surprise, and he was unable to take sufficient avoiding action. Captain Edward Smith was in command of Olympic at the time of the incident.

The staircase at the White Swan Hotel in Alnwick, contains banisters from the Grand Staircase of the Olympic. The staircase is identical to that on Titanic.
