Pearson lands new role

After nearly five months out of the game, former Leicester City boss Nigel Pearson today finally landed a new role.

Pearson has officially taken over from Alan Curbishley as ‘The Name Automatically Linked To A Succession Of Managerial Jobs That He Definitely Won’t Get’.

Said Pearson, “It’s obviously a great honour to be continually linked with vacancies that I have no hope of landing. I think my track record of being overlooked for jobs at Reading, Fulham, QPR, Charlton and Burton made me the stand out candidate to get the job – of definitely not getting the job.

“And while the role was only created by lazy journalists desperately trying to think of a British manager who isn’t David Moyes or Brendan Rodgers, it’s still nice to see my name in print. Even if it is only so fans of that club can then breathe a huge sigh of relief when I predictably don’t get the job."

However, Pearson’s appointment is a fresh blow to Curbishley who for years has relied on being linked to a host of jobs he definitely won’t get, in order to confirm to himself that he’s still alive.

“I’ll be sad not to see my name mentioned underneath Steve Clarke and Paul Ince’s anymore," said Curbishley. “But things could be worse. I could be John Carver."

Longtime, I think what's been very clear since Pearson left is that he didn't achieve those things on his own. Credit to him of course for his man management, getting the best out of his players, but he was a part of a successful team. A team he helped put in place of course.

In that respect it's difficult to compare him to the likes of Gillies because in those days, the manager really took on a number of roles from player recruitment, to coaching, to man management, pretty much the lot.

These days, managers are brought in primarily to coach and make tactical decisions and it's clear that huge credit for re-building our team must primarily go to Walsh. It's no co-incidence that he has been behind every successful Pearson management stint which has relied on signing top talent.

It's too simplistic to look at our success as a football club and attribute it to Nigel Pearson. You would make the same mistake of attributing all of Forests success to Clough. Look at the difference when Peter Taylor left Nottingham Forest. They achieved very little in terms of trophies (one league cup I think?)

If Pearson manages to achieve what he has done at Leicester without Walsh then he's truly one of the all time managerial greats. But he won't. Because he isn't. He's just another very good manager.

Safe to say, no Pearson= no Premier League, in fact it could be division one football we'd be watching still.

Obviously a team effort but the manager picks the backroom team. Gillies had Bert Johnson. A great duo. Oh yes, and Peter Taylor had his own team and look where that got us! I have waited nearly 60 years for success like we have at the moment. We can win the Premier League but it won't be easy. I have a fiver on City at 100/1. Odds now 25/1. Here's to the boys.

OK, so Pearson could be a bit difficult and did not work on his PR. But look at what he inherited and what he built. He got us out of Division One, won the Championship and took into the Premier League. We escaped relegation last season in what was a football miracle. He also backed his team and they and backed and respected him Ranieri has built on Pearson's foundations. Pearson did a great job for Leicester and will be a great asset to his next club. Probably the best manager we have had since Matt Gillies. Even the Great O'Neill of O'Neill could not match Pearson. So give credit where credits is due and I wish him every success (except against us).

No Walsh, no premier league. That's equally a certainty.

As I've said, credit to Pearson for bringing him to both Leicester and Hull. He's not daft and he knows he hasn't a chance of repeating the same success without Walsh which is why he'll try and bring him across for his next job.

Sir Alex on the other hand, now he could get the same results anywhere, working with anyone. That's a top class manager!

Peter Taylor is an interesting one because he had a much bigger role in transfers according to Izzet. He was personally responsible for bringing junior lewis in for example (!?) back when managers were also heads of recruitment.

Not so these days in many cases.. I'm sure back in Gillies day he would have final say in recruitment and be actively involved in scouting players.

As I've said its pointless in some ways trying to compare Ranieri and Pearson to the likes of Gillies because the roles have changed so much even in the last 10 years.

We have head coaches in all but name these days. very different to how it worked years ago
