Can someone explain it to me, because I have been sitting here wondering about it all season and I still don't get it.
for those of you who are unaware of our GK strategy it is for the centre backs to split and lloris play a short pass.
then the centre back gets closed down, so the ball gets passed back to lloris.
then lloris gets closed down and then tries to pick out a fullback who has pushed up the pitch (normally danny rose), who either loses the header, or lloris (whose distribution is poor overall) messes up the kick.
can anyone explain to me what the faaacking point of that is? high risk no reward goal kick strategy
we actually have a big striker, just kick it to him and fight for the second ball from goal kicks.
I am all for playing out from the back, but from broken play, not goal kicks ffs
sooner or later we will concede a dumb goal from it.
usually I get over spurs defeats within the hour, but I am so so disappointed with that result yesterday it is absolutely criminal to let man united off the hook like we did. complete choke.
Goal Kick Strategy

We do the same, although less since we got Benteke in. It's so frustrating. The tactic is so you don't give the ball back to the opposition, this turning over possession, allowing you to keep control of the game. However if it ends in the keeper having to boot it up the pitch under pressure from an onrushing opposition player, why not bloody launch it from the goal kick under no pressure and if you lose the ball, you e lost it high up the pitch?
The tactic is a good one but you have to have the players for it. Also I'd say it's one that shouldn't be used in the PL where players are so quick.

To be fair I thought Hugo's kicking had improved this season, I certainly don't get half as nervous when the ball is played back to him now.
I do get your point about the way we allow ourselves to get closed down, doesn't make a lot of sense as the whole point of the high press is to restrict the opponents in their half.
Throw ins have been frustrating me for ages too...ever noticed how often we give the ball away?

'Throw ins have been frustrating me for ages too...ever noticed how often we give the ball away?'
This x1000.
There was one point we won a throw-in in their attacking third and ended up trying some risky pass to Alli which ended up being a GK for Newcastle. Such stupid football.

Can't help but agree on this. I understand why we want to build play out from the back in an organised manner in certain circumstances. But from a goal kick you have time to set yourselves as you want, so if you're going to play long you might as well do it directly. Or at least vary the strategy.

Said this since the start of AVB being here - it used to frustrate me then.
In theory, Dier should drop back in to make a three at the back, the fullbacks push right up and you get a 343 of sorts.
That's just the style we play now....high press. If the fullbacks are picking the ball up at the back I suppose it allows the other side to commit more bodies forward.
For that part of the game we would be better off with Bentaleb as "Dier".
At the start AVB used to have Sandro dropping off in the middle, whose passing was average at best, and Huddlestone in the thick of the midfield being asked to press. All ars about face

Just hit it up to kane and win second ball

That is pretty much the Dave Bassett model of football
Kick it long, squeeze up and play for 2nd balls

It set England back years. I forget the fellas name now, Charles something. Pioneered the direct method, based on percentages. Taylor used it at Watford and Villa before being embarrased with England

Kicking it long from a goal kick ?
Am not talking about General play. Just goal kicks. And not every time. Can vary it depending on where opposition are. Yesterday Newcastle forwards stayed high and we still did it. Not once or twice. Every time predictable and ridiculous

Nothing wrong with letting your fullback take the ball off the keeper in my opinion. The other one can push up but they are much better at eating up any space they have

yes that's fine if we do it properly. but we don't. because the ball goes back to the keeper and he hits it long anyway, but this time under pressure rather than under no pressure.
