IMO LVGs biggest mistake was not improving the centre back situation. Rio and Vidic had been the old guard for many years. He should also know the injury records of Smalling and Jones. We were clearly after Hummels who decided to stay in his comfort zone. Ramos was always using our name for improved contract terms at Real. However are they the only two CBs in world football that could improve our situation?! I like Blind as a player but he's no CB. This has affected our entire season. LVG clearly thinks we need two defensive midfielders protecting the CBs so we're playing defensive out of necessity.
I'm claiming this is LVGs fault but we don't know if the board promised him deals would happen and they simply didn't. Of course we can play a more attacking game but it'll make us painfully vulnerable.
For me this needs to be priority. Once a decent partnership is in place we don't have to play so many sitting midfielders and start to drive forward as per the United way.
LVGs biggest mistake

I don't think that in a few years time we will be thinking that the LVG years were a disaster. Neither though will we be looking back at them nostalgically either I would imagine.
I do think though that we have the core of a good team and that if he could give them a bit of freedom then the team could be good enough to win the league in the crazy season.
When fit I would like to see the following team
DDG
Darmian
Smalling
Jones
Shaw/Blind while Shaw is injured
Carrick or Schweinsteiger
Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger
Herrera
Martial
Rooney
Depay
That team if given some freedom should be good enough for top 4 at least.
Herrera for me would start nearly every week as I feel that even when he isn't playing well himself he adds urgency to the team and is likely to pop up in scoring positions.
In the summer I would look to strengthen the forward position (with a striker and a winger) and the centre back position.
If we are going to strengthen that in the Winter, and to maybe go back to the OP, I would propose a realistic target like Ashley Williams who has a great record of not missing games. A settled partnership next to Smalling would be good for a few years at least or until we get someone better. Just because he is from Swansea doesn't mean he couldn't do a good job for us (see Bruce, Pallister, Johnsen etc for CB's we've had in PL who were signed from lesser clubs).

VC
Could be, I really like Herrera, think he's a cracking player but also that in his absence maybe we are forgetting that he also had some pretty anonymous games.
If he and Rooney are both fit it'll be interesting to see who LVG goes for in the #10 role.

I don't get the logic of the OP.
You seem to be saying that there are only two centre-backs in the world who could improve the centre-back situation at United.
But then in the next breath effectively say that neither of these two centre-backs would join United anyway.
So, given what you say - that the ONLY two centre-backs who could improve United's centre-back situation wouldn't come to United - then how is this LVG's biggest mistake?
