Clough love.

Brian Clough was always bigger than the club that he was at, would he have been so successful (no disrespect to the clubs he made great etc) with a power big power house traditional club?

He went to Leeds at the time, who were similar to chelsea of today and well the rest is history, perhaps if they had given him a year he would have won something and the following year crashed?

Clough would always be bigger than the club, no matter what team he managed.

Rings true of Mourinho in some ways.

but Clough was a pure raw genius, a true maverick of the time, his personality and uniqueness reflected his finest hour, it was the greatest most unique achievement of any manager ever(just like him) and it's only now we are starting to acknowledge it, even Europe's football beurocrats too!

I'm checking it all out again, after all these yrs, it's making me reconnect with my love of football, which has been absent recently.

Football without romance is dead, an empty void, Liecester are certainly bringing something back, I think we've forgotten what it's all about over the years.

Mourinho, like clough, might suit a team under the radar a bit, where he rocks up and they feel they've got something to prove and he's the total man, they are in awe of him, they are below him, and he creates something unique, no big star players because he's the star, perhaps that's been his downfall at Madrid and now Chelsea? Or he'll just sit on his huge fat load of dosh and think- who gives a' f€£€!

Don't know if you caught this interview about a month ago:

JM admits to being a great admirer and to having studied Cloughie.

I can see the parallels in your example too, though I'd say it's a much taller order nowadays.

Would've been great to see the two go head to head, though as far as the banter's concerned, I think Clough would've destroyed JM.

Thanks for the article, I'm looking forward to seeing the film.

Being bigger than the players is now impossible, even at ordinary premier lg outfits, Jose had a way of doing it before, but some of the players may resent heavily him taking too much credit for last season, once that happens youre finished, the players hold all the power, he lost balance between him & the players, perhaps?

Strangely when he's not at Chelsea I actually don't mind him, he's a character and a good villain, and sadly we didn't get to beat them under Wenger in a true competitive game, regrets I have a few......ok we'll have to do it without him.

__________

Having him at Madrid for three years was truly an ordeal. He did everything he's ever done and worse.

I was against the appointment from the word go. Anyone who knew the guy and knew the club knew too that it could only end in tears.
