I think a prime Rafa without all the injury issue would have gone on to be the GOAT, no question. He had Feds number and dominated him on clay, as well a grass for a long period. But for longevity and all round game I think it has to be Fed.

Mind games from Becker.

Pete was the best on grass, perhaps the best ever on grass. However, he was mediocre on clay. Roger is the best all-court player. Novak is reaching there.

One could also argue that Rod Laver is the GOAT. In his days, US Open and Australian Open were also played on grass.

TnX how is clay the crappiest surface in tennis? It takes a lot amount out of you to become a clay surface unlike hardcourts and grass surface in tennis.

it's a trench war dude.. it makes for long rallies that wear your arms and legs out, taking a bit of the beautiful game out of it.
Federer at his peak was amazing on clay.. check out his monaco masters match with nalbandian for an example of GOAT level play.. but he still lost to nadal in the final I believe, and even broke down in tears because of it. Nadal could beat everybody into submission with long rallies.. didn't take as much precision and beautiful shot-making to win.
