Say what you want about the squad - it's not good enough.
Having said that, I don't see any great squad in the Premier League today.
There are two things that contribute to points gained more than anything else - scoring goals and keeping goals out (without wanting to state the obvious)
Let's start with keeping goals out - we have statistically the most costly player in the Premier league in Simon Mignolet. He has cost us more points than any single player in the last 3 years of any team.
The latest stats suggest that of the last 6 shots on target, 4 have ended up in the back of the net.
The last 2 games are perfect examples of why it's so important to have a good keeper. Cech and De Gea were part of the reason Arsenal and United left Anfield with points.
As for scoring goals - well that's easy. We don't play strikers and that's partly down to injuries but in a way, also down to Klopp. I think Benteke should have started today. Uniteds defence needed testing physically and instead, we offered Firminho, who whilst looking improved of late was the sole worry for a poor United side.
The solution sounds straight forward because it is - Get a new goalkeeper and sign (and start) strikers.
United fans should enjoy today because only the result matters but they were absolutely shambolic - make no mistake about that.
I believe Klopp will start to turn things around eventually - but if rumours are true that Simon Mignolet is to sign a new contract then Jurgens first big decision as manager will be the wrong one.

I actually think the depth of our squad is very good. We have plenty of good squad players and I don't think there is a huge difference if we assembled 2 different teams. And that is our problem. To compete and win things you need a few stand out players and performances. We need a De Gea in the nets and a Suarez up front. Ridiculous I know but that is where we are at. We haven't got the stellar performers at either of the business ends of the pitch. The depth us there no doubt but that wins you feck all on its own. I say we trade a few squad players in, lose Benteke (he's a poor fit), lose Mignolet, lose Lallana and get a keeper and a striker. We need to stop paying loads on potential and hope they come good. Important positions need to be filled by important, reliable performers.

He is not good enough and needs to go or be placed as a number 2 and told.to dight for his spot. I remeber his debut and he was all over the shop. Some people where saying he was choking and even I was surprised as when I saw him at Sunderland he was making tons of saves. That day he saved a pen and that covered over the shaky debut. Now after 2 years looking back at that day and his form to date he is in my opinion not good enough for top 4

I remember Mig's very first game for us. Point blank save (penalty?) and he was the Kop's darling. Like many others, I've been critical of him, yes his distribution is or can be poor, but he cannot be blamed for today's United goal.
Today, our team ran themselves into the ground, in my view they really did give everything.
Their problem? Yes, an absence of strikers is critical, but today, I think they just tried too hard, tried to play at such a pace they were prone to miss their chances.
They're still my team and they are getting better.

Someone posted the stats the other day and the errors leading to goals were no worse than anyone bat ddg and Cech I think, and he was only +1 on them. He's being beaten up over stats that relate to his horrid mid to late 2014 form that saw him dropped.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw a stat saying we concede 1 out of every 3 shots we face on target. 'Keepers like DDG&Cech are around 1:5/6 IIRC. This is also despite conceding less shots per game than most of the premier league.
If a shot is on target then there's a decent chance it's a goal.

Mig could save all the shots in open play in the world, but if he can't command his box, handle crosses and set pieces, then what's the point? Teams will keep targetting that area of the 6 yard box. I don't see Mig ever being able to handle that. In the time he has been here he has not improved especially in that area.
Signing a new contract isn't necessarily a bad thing. I don't think Klopp sees him as our long term number one but he's not exactly sheet either. Tieing him down means we can bring in someone else without worrying about him getting fidgety. He can stay as our number two or compete with others for his position (which I think Klopp tried to do but Bogdan was cack, Ward should get a crack) perhaps and if he does leave we will then get a decent fee for him.
If he doesn't sign now the likelihood of him leaving on a free would increase too, so maybe the contract is more strategic than meets the eye.

I agree.
By signing a new contract it ensures that we can get decent money for him.
We all know what Mignolets weaknesses are. What worries me the most about him is his lack of presence. To be a successful goalkeeper at a big club you need to be mentally strong. I don't think Mignolet has that type of character and his nervousness and hesitancy transfers to the team, especially the defenders playing in front of him.
I would like to see us bring in a new keeper in the summer who can battle it out with him for the jersey. He would be an more than adequate substitute for a season or two.
However, criticisms aimed at him for not doing better for Rooney's goal yesterday are insane. Rooney leathered it from only a few yards out and Mig had no chance of stopping it.

You shouldn't look at his clean sheet record then as it's very good. Stats and all that
--------------------------------
I'm actually going to agree with Arouna!!!!
People state that when ever any criticism is labelled at migs, that he's had the most clean sheets in 2015 and that it's the defenders fault "like Wednesday night" but shouldn't the defenders get some credit for the clean sheets as well?
The simple fact of the matter is that Simon Mignolet is not good enough (he's not on his own in that) he doesn't command his box at set pieces or crosses and it's getting to the point now that every time we concede a corner, we concede a goal.
I saw a stat the other day that he's was second in goal keepers in pass completion, not hard when he's passing it to sakho virtually every time but as soon as he attempts a long ball or goal kick. The ball comes straight back and the defence is under pressure!
Yet he's been given a new deal to 2021!

I don't see the logic in that, give him more money and a longer deal in the hope of getting more money for him?
What if he digs his heels in, like Borini....
Or other managers can see his weakness and don't want to match the transfer value or wages he is on?

Using Borini as a barometer is flawed logic, but as we all know you're obsessed with him, so the comparison is to be expected.
Borini did indeed dig his heels in (which is generally not the norm when a manager, club and an entire fanbase wants a player out) but despite this was still loaned out and eventually sold
I still expect us to bring in a new keeper soon enough, probably a new GK coach as well.
Meanwhile we will have Mignolet as competition /cover. Or perhaps he will be sold for a greater amount rather than letting his contract run down and sold for a pittance.

Who was the other Italian guy who also dug his heels in Aqualaini(sp?)
Easier said than done to sell a player, hell, Kone, Gibson etc all need to be shown the door but we are stuck with them and like Mingolet....they are not good enough.
Borini would as you point out be better use as a barometer
