Well the quality is bad this season and we are lucky otherwise we would be even further adrift !
But to me that just shows these players are not good enough even more.
They have dossiers on all players they may be interested in. One of the things Moyes implemented was a more thorough approach to this. It includes all kinds of things including injury risk, temperament etc.
remember reading an interesting article about it.
Fellaini was just Moyes stupidity for some reason.
I was talking about the youth but addressed your point also about players not performing and getting most out of them etc. I just happen to believe that we don't have enough qualities well as a manager that is just not doing it, so imo a combination of the two.

We need more quality in the squad. I'm not disputing that.

Just think your conviction that we need a scouting overhaul is unfounded.

Not really..second bottom in the Academy league. City and Chelsea have recruited widely in these age groups in the last few years and invested heavily .
Plenty of articles these last two weeks or so on this, search out a couple. We are a mess compared to them at U18 level anyhow.

Again I'm not talking about youth teams.

I am though. Those clubs have scouted many of these kids and put way more resources, efforts and money in.
Regarding the first team squad we are way short on quality, it's too thin as well now, another mistake by LVG.
I am talking about first XI...not good enough simple as. A better manager would have had us near the top now that's for sure but I don't believe they would win us the league with this lot. Yes the league's quality is not high. Had we appointed Maureen in December I dare say with a couple of astute buys he would have had us go close to winning it because the quality is not that high.

Scouting for transfers and youth systems are two different things.

Scouting is scouting, be it different age groups thats all and we need a revamp. Doesn't matter whether it's for a transfer of a senior player or a 16 year old like that Dutch kid.
Read the stuff about our academy and how far we have fallen behind because we don't have enough scouts and investment. It needs addressing and as I said before Moyes attempted too a little and LVG has identified the club need to search and buy quality from a much wider network. He has said all this.

This is different from youth scouts where the likes of Moyes and Van Gaal have hardly any influence.

I am not so sure your last sentence is accurate of what happens. Often SAF would oversee the signings of youth players and seems LVG has been doing the same.
Anyhow seems we don't totally agree, Personally think the club is in a big mess from top to bottom. many issues to be sorted.
A new manager and better quality of players signed at all levels. Whether that means better decision making and/or scouting who really knows. What is known is that more investment and resources are needed at youth level to keep up with the likes of Chelsea and Man City.
I don't even think its necessarily Galacticos that are needed to improve us. Just cherry pick a few that performed well already in the PL where possible. Leicester, Soton, West Ham have players perhaps we could get our hands on.
Lets face it the unattainable are going to be even more so now we are in such a mess:
ie. Ronaldo,Bale,Muller,Lewandowski,Griezmann,Kroos
etc
