Riyad Mahrez, closest Ive seen to Pires

Game by game as the pressure is turned on this 24 year old french algerian just keeps delivering. It is a big leap to compare him to Pires who at his peak was probably better than Giggs. Pires combined that rare ability of good wing play and great playmaking ability. The league has had some amazing wingers, the former Spurs winger Ginola is one of my favourite, Marc Overmars another.

Giggs is the best Ive seen in terms of stretching teams and delivering quality ball but he never had that magical playmaking qualities Pires had. Other wingers or so called wingers like Ronaldo and Bale were great but did most of their damage from the middle.

If you look up the top 10 premiership wingers you will notice we have at least 3 of which all played under Wenger (Pires,Ljungberg,Overmars) and there is a case for Nasri aswell.

So Wenger certainly knows the difference between good and great wingers. Was listening to a podcast on Arseblog and Tim Stillman insists that Wenger is aware of the imbalance caused by a lack of quality winger on the right side.We can assume that Ox was going to try to make the position his own but its clear he prefers to play in the middle, the same way Walcott who was decent when he played on the right also prefers to play up top. Cambell is not good enough. He could get better but simply doesn't stretch teams on that side.

Wing play isnt just about putting your head down and running the channels, that doesnt work in the modern game hence why players like Lennon, Townsend, SWP, Johnson have failed to make it.The modern game has no space for those kind of wingers of which interestingly most are british.

Mahrez has everything you need and to top it up, he has goals. His appreciation for space and ability to pick a pass makes him the best winger in the league at the moment.Fair enough he doesnt track back and loses the ball at times but in an attack where its pretty much him and Vardy he delivers big time.City doubled up on him yesterday but he destroyed Korolov all day.

What ever he costs and he wont cost anymore than what City paid for Sterling we must sign this guy.I imagine he will trigger a bidding war of which Wenger shies away from most but if he managed to stave Liverpool off Sanchez I imagine he will try his best to land Mahrez signature.

He is french and that helps I guess and apparently when he joined Le Havre in 2010, he turned down offers from leading French teams Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille to join them, being enticed by their youth system.

Get him Wenger

Pires better than Giggs you say?

That is a very interesting point of view my friend. It is no slight on Robert when I say that I don't believe he could hold a candle to Ryan Giggs at his best. And that is my only contribution.

Pires was class, but classing him as a winger is a stretch in my opinion. Ashley Cole was your winger back then for me, from the back
