We have been poor in the transfer market over the last two seasons that it got me thinking how many players have given us false hope with good debuts but turn out pants in the end. Here is my list:
1) El Hadji Diouf: Superb debut and later scored two goals in his 3rd game I believe. Was downhill from there and an embarrassment to the club
2) Andy Carol: Club record who arrived injured but scored two superb goals on his debut. Was continuously injured and no notable performance after.
3) Joe Allan: Remember watching his debut against Man City and thinking we had a special player here. Seems to only play well against city and have been poor otherwise.
4) Simon Mignolet: Fans were upset when Reina was replaced with Mignolet but after a superb debut where he kept a clean sheet against Stoke including a penaly save everyone was hailing him. Has been a liability between the sticks since.
5) Dirk Kuyt: Came off the bench against Everton for his debut and was unplayable upfront. Struggled to sore goals after and was shifted to the right. Had some success but not what we bought him for.
6) Salif Diao: Combination of superb worldcup (not to mention that goal) and Houllier calling him the new Viera, expectation was high. Good solid debut but very quickly turn pants. His match against Fulham which Xabi replaced him was the lowest point.
7) Abel Xavier: I could not understand why we bought him but he did score on his debut against Ipswich. Mediocre after.
8) Rigobert Song: Join us after Roy Evens left us with the worst defense I can remember. Superb debut against Coventry and made our defense look strong instantaneously. The good form only lasted for a while and was shipped off to Westham.
9) Daniel Agger: Agger oozed quality all over. Was injured when he first came and was only played in a 3 man defense in his first season. Second season he was superb scoring against westham and in the champions leage semi final. He was so good he kept Samy Hyppia out of the team. Unfortunately after one good season, he never became the world class player his potential suggested he would be.
10) Aqualani: Again another injured signing by Rafa. When he was finally fit enough to play, he was superb. However his Liverpool career never took off.
Who else would you add to this list?

You can spell El Hadji Diouf but not Andy Carroll or Joe Allen?

Unfair to have both Agger and Kuyt on the list!

The singer's last solo record was 2006's The Sweet Escape, which scored number three in the US and 14 in the UK.

I've actually been on 606 since it was on bbc but has never been one to comment on post, previous account name nando's peri peri morientes.
Yes may seem harsh to have Kuyt and Agger in the list given they did win the carling cup during their time (not sure if Agger played in the FA cup during the 2006 season) but I had them in as they brought so much excitement on their debut but failed to live up to the expectation.
One I considered but did not put in was Igor Biscan, kept Hamann out initially but I never thought he was going to be a superstar and he did play well in the season we won the champions league.
Apologies to the spelling Naz is for getting names wrong.
