I went to bed disappointed and woke up even more so. I'm genuinely worried for us as there are some things alarming me following this transfer window.
Yes we got Adebayor on loan, but it's just that - on loan. I don't think his motivations will be huge as he won't be here next year so why does he care if we get top 4 again?
Yes we shipped out deadwood(£26 millions worth has been banded around) and got others out on loan. However have we shipped out too many?
Also why wasn't this money spent? This stinks to me of Arsenal a few years ago when they were more focussed on saving for a new stadium. Look at them a few years later, if you have top 4 ambitions you cannot afford to fall behind your rivals.
The Gary Cahill deal - yes I understand I don't have the exact figures however it's thought that Bolton wanted £15m for him, Spurs weren't happy with this as he has only 12 months left on his contact. To me this is 100% the wrong decision (if these figures are correct). It would be more acceptable if we end up with him on a free next year however if a player of his quality and reputation are available on a Bosman there will be teams in for him who offer more wages (and probably CL) meaning we miss out. This to me is so short sighted and stubborn as usual from Spurs and what seems is our terrible negotiation methods. Would it not make sense to say "We are rid of Crouch & Palacios for £16m, let's use that for Cahill". It's still reducing the wage bill and there's no other outlay.
The wage structure is a bit of a grey area for me. Yes I understand that we are soundly run, and no I don't want us chucking ridiculous money at every player. However other teams seem to recognise that they need to break their structure at some point in order to move to that next echelon. Take Stoke as an example. I'm not jealous of the players they have signed, however they have bought extremely well in order to potentially get to the next group of clubs in the premier league. There's no doubt they'd have to make these new players their highest earners in order to achieve this. At some point every club has to take this jump, even of it's taking your highest earners from £60k to £80k.
Lastly, where is all of the Champions League money? Not only did we make £20-25m profit this window, along with the usual profits we make, add in the £20-odd million from the Champions League and that's a hefty sum! Yet Harry is out pleading poverty - "we need to sell before we can buy".
Sorry for the extremely long post and I'm sure I'll calm down in a few weeks however I am disappointed in our dealings this window.
