What a game!

Well well well that was quite something and I was convinced after the Leicester taking the lead and us wasting a few good chances that it was going to be Leicester's day and we were out of the title. However everything changed after the red card and it almost felt like a matter of time until we got the winner (even if it was right at the death).

Now usually in games like this it's very characteristic of Arsenal to start slowly, to be too intimidated by the occasion, however this time (like United at home) we started on the front foot. We however didn't really make much of our early dominance and didn't create as many chances as we should have.

Around halfway through the first half you could see Leicester starting to build in confidence and play their game, all starting with a great chance from Vardy brilliantly denied by Cech. It was a frantic affair and Kante for Leicester was absolutely outstanding, mopping up everything and just being all over the pitch, I don't know where he gets his energy from.

Then there was the penalty. Now me personally I think that although Vardy definitely did play for it there was clear contact and Monreal did miss his tackle so he invited Vardy to take the tumble. Lots of Arsenal fans were mad about this penalty but you've just got to think if that was at the other end I would be screaming for a penalty and I'm sure most other Arsenal fans would as well. Great composure from Vardy to slot home the penalty, as you'd expect, and we're going into half time with a feeling of injustice and probably slightly unlucky to be behind.

Next talking point was obviously the Mahrez penalty appeal. Think this was definitely a case of home advantage here and the crowd got to Atkinson as it wouldn't have surprised me to see that one given as well (it was very similar to the Vardy penalty) but this time the 50/50 went our way.

We were playing well but it was always going to be hard to break Leicester down when they had all 11 players on the pitch and although I think we would probably have got a draw a win I don't think was possible.

Then there was a moment of madness from Danny Simpson. Having just been booked he pulled back Giroud and although it may be seen as soft he should never have gave the referee the opportunity.

Leicester down to 10 and then dominance from Arsenal. Don't know what was happening with Alexis but he couldn't hit a barn door and I don't think Ramsey's selfishness and own poor finishing was helping wither.

First shot on target Walcott scores and chance after chance coming our way but once again we're still being wasteful. Schmeichel makes an excellent save near the end and it seems like it won't be our day.

Introducing DAT GUY WELBZ.

Özil free kick after a stupid foul is conceded by Wasilewski and although I thought Mesut had a pretty average performance he whips in a perfect free kick and there is the man himself, Welbz, to nod home after almost a full year out. The crowd erupted like I haven't seen the Emirates for a long time, we're fully in the title race now.

Now we need to use this momentum to kick on through these tough next few fixtures and show champions form like we did in the early Wenger days. Let's go on a big winning streak and take this, our best chance in years, to win the title.

All credit to Leicester today who fought valiantly, it was just too much to ask defending against that onslaught for the final 30 mins with 10 men.

Hope you still have a strong finish and please finish above Spurs, you deserve it.

Losing a big game at the death is something we're familiar with at Leicester

The score was flattering for Leiceste. Missed several sitters and should have had 3 penalties

Leicester still have not won a league game against Arsenal since November 1994.

Good article Whip.
Good game involving two good teams. Stupid of Simpson to get himself sent off and even more stupid of Wasilewsky clattering Chambers when not threatening with 94 minutes gone.
It would have probably been another story had not Atkinson bottled the Mahrez penalty. Two nil and Monreal sent off for a second yellow. Still, you kept at it and on another day Alexis Sanchez might have got a few more on target!
Keeps the season interesting.

Before the sending-off, Leicester looked like a title candidate. After, they looked like a relegation candidate.
It is possible to maintain your shape and win tackles even when you are a man down. Leicester, however, were all over the pitch. They totally lost it.

Agree with you to some extent Thomas. They didn't totally lose it. Wasilewsky lost it with 94 minutes gone. Otherwise it was a draw. Not too bad with only 10 men against a side of Arsenal's quality.

How can you say we were all over the place when we were extremely well organised, defended brilliantly and kept our shape even when we went down to 10 men. The two banks of four were clearly there in two lines for the whole game.

Drinky should have kept it in the corner and Wasi shouldnt have fouled Chambers.

Monreal should have been sent off because it was a foul on Mahrez.

But good article by the OP, well balanced and fair. On another day, with another ref, it could have been different but that's football and you accept it and move on.
